He could see rescuers searching for him. They couldn't see him.

When 19-year-old Dylan Gowan's personal watercraft broke down off New Jersey, he spent the night stranded offshore after his Jet Ski began to sink.

Search crews were looking for him, but he had no way to signal them. He was finally spotted the next morning after leaving his refuge and swimming toward shore.

It's a good reminder: You may never plan to be on your PWC after dark. An emergency can change those plans quickly.

Be prepared to signal for help.

He was found Wednesday morning conscious and responsive.
