Mount Rushmore has been described as “Three Surveyors and Another Guy.” While George Washington, Thomas Jefferson and Abraham Lincoln were technically surveyors, Theodore Roosevelt is also linked to the profession. After leaving office, he led an expedition to navigate and map the Amazon, known as the Roosevelt-Rondon Scientific Expedition. Although not formally part of the survey crew, Roosevelt and his son helped out with many of the surveying tasks during the expedition. So, maybe Mount Rushmore should be described as “Three and a Half Surveyors.” 😊

This Black History Month, we pay tribute to Howard P. Grant, a man of many firsts. Born in 1925, Grant became the first black graduate of the University of California, Berkeley College of Engineering. He went on to become the first black engineer for the City and County of San Francisco, where he addressed water engineering issues, and the first recorded black member of the American Society of Civil Engineers in 1948. He was the second black civil engineer to be licensed by the state of California. (That’s three “firsts” and one “second,” if you’re counting.) In 1970, he hosted the first meeting of Northern California's black engineers at his home. This group would evolve into today’s 300-member Northern California Council of Black Professional Engineers. Howard P. Grant was not only known as a respected civil engineer, but also hailed as an “inspiration and mentor” to minorities throughout California and the entire country.
