✨🎉 Anchors Aweigh for Akela’s Holiday! 🎉✨
This year's holiday party was nothing short of magical as we set sail aboard the William D. Evans Sternwheeler. This iconic paddleboat provided an ideal backdrop to commemorate what defines us as a Wolf Pack. ✨

From laughter and spirited dancing on the lower deck 💃 to engaging in meaningful conversations beneath the stained-glass skylights, this night was about honoring what we have built together and the path that lies ahead.

As we toasted to 2025, we reflected on our journey—how far we have come, the milestones we achieved, and the evident in all we accomplished—and the exciting future that awaits us. Thank you to all who contributed to making this night truly memorable.

✨A few highlights and some exciting updates from our Open House!✨
In 2022, Akela joined the family, laying a strong foundation in the fast-growing Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing (MEP) engineering space. Over the past two years, we have delivered innovative, high-quality projects in partnership with Michael Baker’s Sustainable and Resilient Solutions (SRS) team.

At our recent Akela Open House, we reflected on how far we’ve come and had the pleasure of sharing some exciting news with our colleagues and clients:

Starting January 1, 2025, Akela will fully integrate with Michael Baker’s SRS vertical. This integration brings amazing benefits to our clients and partners, including:

✨What a night at the 2024 Orchids & Onions Awards Gala! 🎉
We were thrilled to attend this amazing event, hosted at West at 1011 Union St. The gala, presented by the , celebrated the best in architecture, design, and planning across San Diego and Tijuana. It was a night full of incredible designs, great conversations, and a sense of pride for all the innovative work happening in our region. ✨

We had the pleasure of working on the 37-story mixed-use high-rise in downtown San Diego as the electrical engineering team. This $400 million development by Holland Partner Group features 431 luxury apartments, 289,000 sq. ft. of office space, and 10,000 sq. ft. of retail space.

Last week, we had the pleasure of gathering with our amazing team for a potluck. 🦃🥧
From savory dishes and roasted vegetables to delectable desserts and refreshing drinks, there was something for everyone. As we savored each bite, we couldn't help but feel a deep sense of appreciation for our dedicated team.

So, to our incredible Wolf Pack, thank you for your unwavering dedication and the passion you bring to work each day. Your creativity, resilience, and collaborative spirit are the cornerstones of our success, and we are incredibly thankful for your role in making Akela what it is today.

Misty Perry serves as the Chief Financial Officer at Akela Engineering & Consulting, where she oversees all financial and accounting matters, including managing the accounting team, analyzing financial data to provide informed recommendations to the CEO, and ensuring that the right personnel are in place to efficiently perform all required duties.

Her love for accounting began in her senior year of high school, leading her to obtain a bachelor’s degree in accounting, followed by a master’s degree in forensic accounting. In addition to her academic qualifications, she is committed to continuous learning and regularly attends seminars, webinars, and other educational events to stay abreast of developments and best practices in her field.

Misty’s career path has been nothing short of impressive. She began as a payroll specialist and worked her way up to the position of VP's assistant, where she gained a comprehensive understanding of the organization, including its accounting functions.

Before joining Akela Engineering & Consulting, she held key accounting roles at notable engineering and architecture firms. She values mentorship and recognizes its importance in professional growth and success. As such, she strives to collaborate with professionals who share her passion for accounting and possess an open-mindedness to learning.

Aside from her professional endeavors, Misty also has a passion for travel and experiencing diverse cultures. During her tenure in the military, where she was stationed in England, she was able to travel extensively throughout the region and Europe. She has also explored numerous US states, including Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, Virginia, Florida, and Texas.

Despite all her travels, England remains one of her favorite destinations.

In 1984, the InterContinental San Diego was celebrated as the first major high-rise hotel since the Westgate had opened 20 years earlier, but San Diego has been experiencing a building boom, with thousands of hotel room under construction and in various stages of planning since 2018.

We were delighted to play a role in bringing back this prominent fixture to the city's skyline after a 31-year hiatus along with , HMT Electric Inc., and John Portman & Associates, Inc. The InterContinental San Diego is part of a complex of two hotels built on the site of the former Lane Field baseball stadium and is comprised of 18-story and 400-room. The project represents a $217 million investment and marks the final phase of the complex's development.

The InterContinental San Diego officially opened for business in 2018.

“I appreciate the mentorship I get here. The company fosters an environment where no question is too silly to ask, and it has allowed me to continuously learn, grow, and widen my skillset.”

Ladan Eslami is a Mechanical Engineer who specializes in HVAC system design and calculations for various projects, particularly in education. With experience in office and lab projects, she has enjoyed the challenge of identifying unknown variables and adding to her skill set with Akela. As a high school student, Ladan chose to focus on math and physics, which eventually led her to her career in engineering. Her passion for learning and engineering motivated her to leave her home country of Iran, where she faced limitations as a minority woman. One of her significant projects was a large lab and office project with many unknown factors, and despite the complexity of the system and designs, she enjoyed the challenge.

Ladan's interest in HVAC systems led her to intern with an HVAC contractor, where she discovered the complexity of seemingly simple systems. She enjoys the challenge of this complexity and appreciates the supportive environment at Akela, where mentorship is encouraged, and continuous growth is fostered. The company holds weekly seminars where employees can ask questions and benefit from the experience of mentors. Ladan aims to become a project manager and hopes to be a successful and knowledgeable engineer whom others can learn from and grow with.

She advises students to persevere through the struggles of their college careers and urges them to push through to the rewarding end, noting that while it may seem unreachable, "if you push forward and not give up you will look back and it [will all be] worth it.” In her spare time, Ladan loves to travel and experience new places, cultures, and food, particularly in the Middle East.
