"A lot of parents, the first thing they ask is whether I can do it without anesthesia." Dr. Nur Saadeddin (.laser) on what that question is really about. For many children it's a first visit to any doctor — they've never had anesthesia, and what the parent is afraid of isn't the cavity. It's a bad reaction to the injection. Being able to answer yes changes the whole appointment. She describes what happens next: the parents see it done without anesthesia, and the following day they book an appointment for themselves. That's the part worth noticing. The child's visit becomes the parent's introduction to laser dentistry — and a practice that can treat anxious children tends to end up treating their anxious parents too. Endodontics is the discipline where small errors compound. The access cavity shapes everything that follows, and what you leave behind in the canal decides whether the case holds. Er:YAG works across all three stages: → Opening preparation — reduced collateral thermal damage and fewer micro fractures in the access → Canal cleaning — removes the smear layer and cleans root canals → Apicoectomy — performed in a cleaner, less invasive way The common thread is the wavelength. At 2940 nm the energy is absorbed almost entirely at the surface it strikes, so you remove what you intend to and leave the surrounding structure intact — which matters more in a tooth you're trying to keep for another thirty years than almost anywhere else in the mouth. In soft tissue work, the question isn't only what you cut. It's what you leave behind. Er:YAG at 2940 nm ablates only the surface of the irradiated soft tissue. Because the wavelength is so highly absorbed by water, the energy is spent where it lands instead of travelling into the tissue underneath. What that means chairside: → Ablation confined to the surface of the irradiated area → Minimal collateral thermal damage → Shorter recovery time for the patient Gingivectomy, frenectomy, biopsy, implant recovery, pocket debridement — the same precision applies across the soft tissue indications.
