Think a torsion spring's legs are just there for mounting? Think again! ⚙️

The length of those legs actually alters your active coils. When the spring goes to work, the legs bend a little. This deflection essentially adds "stealth" coils to the body, which lowers your spring rate and changes your torque calculations.

If you don't account for leg length, your spring is going to twist right out of specification.

So, how do you know which one is right for your design? We break down the exact rules for choosing between a push, pull, or rotational spring.

The Quick Cheat Sheet:
👉 Use a Compression Spring if your project needs a "pushing" force to bounce back. Think of a mattress, a car suspension, or a pen button. They are incredibly strong and last a very long time.
👉 Use an Extension Spring if your project needs a "pulling" force to return to home. Think of a trampoline or a heavy garage door. They are perfect for pulling two separate parts together.
👉 Use a Torsion Spring if your project moves in a circle or flips open on a hinge. Think of a clipboard clip, a safety gate hinge, or a vehicle door handle. They sit right on a pin and create rotational torque.
