Ever noticed a subtle shimmer in certain wood floors – silver-toned flecks that seem to catch the light at a different angle from the rest of the grain?

Those are medullary rays. Channels that carried nutrients through the living tree. When oak is quartersawn – cut at a specific angle through the log – they appear on the surface of every board.

It's one of those details that's easy to walk past, and hard to forget once you know what you're looking at.

The octagonal library at Turnberry Manor traces its form directly to a dovecote – a traditional French pigeon house with a vaulted roof and central lantern at the top.

Architect Michael G. Imber took that reference and translated it into a full-height timber frame pavilion at a private residence in San Antonio, Texas.

Reclaimed white oak beams carry the structure above. Rift and quartered white oak panelling, bookshelves, and wainscoting line the walls below.

This is what happens when you commit to a single species and trust it completely.

The oldest thing in this room took over a century to look this way.

Wheaton Wallboard is reclaimed from barns and structures across the U.S. – pale ash, weathered grey, deep brown. A century of exposure on every board.

Used here as a full-height room divider in a contemporary Austin home, the aged boards sit against clean walls, wide plank floors, and modern furniture without missing a beat.

Some materials need the right setting. Wheaton works in almost any of them.

Wood in desert light has a particular quality – it absorbs rather than reflects, and brings a liveability that harder materials don't.

In Casa 13, perched on the north slope of Camelback Mountain, that quality does a lot of work.

Our Poplar plank runs from the interior living spaces out to the shaded patios, holding the connection between inside and out without interrupting the sightlines.

Walnut flooring pairs with Portuguese limestone inside, grounding the lighter architecture with warmth and density.

From broad planks to intricate pattern work, this project explores the full range of what can be achieved with well-selected wood.

Laurel Plank begins as select grade solid plain sawn white oak, chosen for its strength, stability, and consistent grain.

It moves through the home in a series of layouts – straight runs, chevron, and hand-cut detailing – subtly defining each space while maintaining a cohesive material language.

Finished on site in a deep, rich tone, the oak takes on a more resolved presence, allowing each shift in pattern to feel deliberate and controlled.

The vision for this Cordillera Ranch home was simple in principle: orient everything to the view.

Set into a steep hillside, the architecture pushes outward to create a home that feels almost suspended above the golf course.

To frame this view, we specified the Concan Plank with a custom finish through the main living spaces. The wider boards allow the floor to read as a continuous surface, carrying the eye through the interior and out toward the landscape.

A custom finish ensures it sits comfortably within the palette, giving the space a sense of cohesion as it opens out.
