I recently finished The Coaching Habit and then moved straight into Michael Bungay Stanier’s next book, The Advice Trap. Both were powerful reads — and unexpectedly uncomfortable ones.

They didn’t make me feel ashamed.
But they did make me stop and ask a harder question:

“What if the way I’ve been leading… isn’t actually leadership?”

I’ve always believed in being in the trenches with my team.
Night installs.
Messy syrup lines.
Heavy equipment.
Long hours.

If the work is dirty, physical, or hard — I’m there. I’ve told myself this is how you show respect. This is how you prove you’re not above the work. This is how you earn loyalty.

But The Advice Trap exposed something deeper.

When I’m always giving advice…
When I step in before my technicians finish the job…
When I “help” even when they’re capable…

I’m getting short-term wins.
The job gets done.
Everyone feels supported.
I feel useful.

But I may also be stealing something far more important.

Their growth.
Their ownership.
Their confidence as leaders.

Michael Bungay Stanier talks about how advice is seductive. It feels generous. It feels efficient. It feels like leadership. But often, it’s really about making ourselves feel valuable — not about making others more capable.

The Coaching Habit taught me that real leadership isn’t about having the answers — it’s about asking better questions.

And The Advice Trap made me realize this uncomfortable truth:

If I’m always the one doing the work, solving the problems, and stepping in — then my team never gets the chance to truly lead without me.

That’s not the future I want.

I don’t want a business that depends on my presence.
I want leaders who can think, decide, and execute — even when I’m not there.

So I’m learning to pause.
To ask instead of tell.
To let things be done differently — not worse, just differently.
To trade short-term comfort for long-term capability.

This isn’t about becoming a softer leader.
It’s about becoming a smarter one.

Leadership, I’m learning, isn’t proven by how much you do.
It’s proven by how much others can do because of you.

The Philosophy of Hospitality

While reading Unreasonable Hospitality by Will Guidara, I came across a passage that perfectly captures what true hospitality looks like.

He describes “the kind of person who runs after a stranger on the street to return a dropped scarf…
who stops by with a plate of cookies to welcome a new family to the neighborhood…
who offers to help carry a stranger’s heavy stroller up the subway stairs.”

That kind of person does good things not for recognition or reward,
but simply because showing graciousness to others makes their own day better.

That’s the heart of what Will Guidara calls unreasonable hospitality,
and at Andy’s Beverage Company, it’s what we aim to practice every day.

We believe that true hospitality doesn’t start with a customer — it starts with character.

What you thinking?

I’m not talking about what’s on your mind — I’m talking about how you think.
Because the way you think changes everything about how you lead, how you work, and how you show up for your team.

Here’s a quick breakdown of the five ways of thinking that separate the good from the great:

1. Systems Thinking – This is about seeing how everything connects. Nothing stands alone. You move one lever, and three others shift. Great leaders don’t just fix problems; they understand how the problem fits into the system.

2. Strategic Thinking – It’s the long game. Knowing what matters most and where you’re headed, even when things get messy. It’s about not letting today’s noise drown out tomorrow’s goals.

3. Critical Thinking – Call it the BS detector. It’s looking at facts, not feelings. Asking the hard questions before making the call. The best teams think critically before they act impulsively.

4. Anticipatory Thinking – Always scanning the horizon. You can’t predict everything, but you can prepare. The folks who think ahead aren’t lucky — they’re just ready when the storm hits.

5. Symphonic Thinking – This is where it all comes together. You’re not just playing your instrument; you’re conducting the orchestra. Different roles, different voices, all in rhythm toward one sound.

The best teams I’ve been part of don’t just work hard — they think better.
And that starts with awareness: how we think, how we connect, and how we show up for each other.

Strong ground starts with people.

I’m reading Strong Ground by Brené Brown, and this line on page 19 really hit me: building new capabilities on top of old dysfunction is risky. Instead, organizations need to double down on core stability and functional strength.

In business, that means investing in people.
Because people — and the way they connect with each other — are the strong ground every organization stands on.

The rugby metaphor she uses is perfect: just like players plant their feet firmly before moving forward, companies need a solid base in their people before chasing growth.

Unlocking Your Potential: Insights from Kelly McGonigal’s Trilogy

I’ve just dived into the wisdom of Kelly McGonigal, reading her three transformative books back-to-back: The Willpower Instinct, The Upside of Stress, and The Joy of Movement. Each of these books offers unique insights that aren’t just about personal growth, but also about becoming more effective and resilient in business and life.

1. The Willpower Instinct
McGonigal explores how willpower is like a muscle that we can strengthen. By understanding the science behind self-control, we learn how to make better decisions, resist temptations, and build habits that support long-term success. This translates directly into business by helping us stay focused, motivated, and resilient under pressure.

2. The Upside of Stress
In this book, McGonigal redefines stress as something that can be harnessed for growth and resilience. By embracing stress and viewing it as a tool, we can transform challenges into opportunities. This perspective helps us remain adaptable and innovative in business, turning pressure into a catalyst for improvement.

3. The Joy of Movement
Finally, McGonigal shows us that movement is not just about physical health, but also about joy, connection, and mental well-being. When we move our bodies, we boost our mood, reduce stress, and foster deeper social bonds. This translates into business by enhancing creativity, teamwork, and overall resilience.

Bringing It All Together
By integrating these three powerful insights, we learn that a balanced, resilient, and joyful mindset is the foundation for success. It’s not just about working harder; it’s about working smarter, nurturing both mind and body, and embracing the power of movement, willpower, and stress resilience.

I just finished The Upside of Stress by Kelly McGonigal, PhD, and it completely changed how I view stress.

If you don’t have time to read the book, I strongly recommend watching her TED Talk or finding a podcast interview. Her research shows that changing the way you think about stress can make you healthier and more resilient.

This is essential knowledge for anyone navigating business, leadership, or life in general.

The book Bet on Talent by Dee Ann Turner has been one of my favorites.

Dee Ann spent over 30 years at Chick-fil-A, serving as Vice President of Talent and later Vice President of Sustainability. She helped shape the people-first culture that made Chick-fil-A one of the most admired brands in the world.

Her core message is clear: businesses don’t succeed because of products alone — they succeed because of people. When leaders bet on the right talent and create a culture where people thrive, performance follows.

A great reminder for all of us: invest in people, and you invest in long-term success.

🚗 Merging Onto the Highway — and Into New Skills

When I first learned to drive, merging onto the highway felt like a life-or-death mission. My hands were clenched on the wheel, my heart was pounding, and every move felt risky.

But after enough practice, something changed.
Merging became ordinary… easy… almost automatic.

That’s how all skills work.
The first attempts are uncomfortable. You overthink every step. Fear sits in the passenger seat.

Then you keep showing up.
You repeat the process.
You learn the rhythm.
And one day, you realize you’re “merging” without even thinking about it.

Public speaking. Leading a team. Learning a new system.
Every skill follows the same curve—fear to familiarity to fluency.

So if you’re at the “white-knuckle” stage right now, don’t quit.
Just keep getting on that on-ramp.
The traffic will start to feel like home.
