🖤 Our latest Saturday From the Archives is now on TikTok! 🧡

This week’s post features a larger collection of photographs from the old Grand Strand Chapter Harley Owners Group albums, with memories reaching back into the 1980s. You’ll chapter gatherings, an early bike show at Myrtle Square Mall, an MDA event and plenty of familiar faces.

The story of how these albums eventually found their way back to our family is almost as special as the photographs themselves so make certain you read the caption.

Take a look, and if you recognize yourself, a family member or an old friend, please leave a comment and let us know!

TODAY’S PART OF THE DAY

Some parts are collectible not only because of what is inside the package, but because the package itself survived.

Today’s feature is a genuine Harley-Davidson OEM lower seat-post spring set, original part number 3128-29 and later part number 51770-29.

The complete NOS four-piece set remains inside its early Harley-Davidson cloth parts bag, manufactured by the Troy Sunshade Company of Troy, Ohio. The original string is still tied, and the handwritten part-number tag remains attached.

Without opening or disturbing the bag, we carefully examined the contents through the thin cloth. All four pieces can be distinguished: two longer cushion springs, one shorter cushion spring, and one guide collar.

Early Harley-Davidson cloth parts bags are collectible pieces of dealership and distribution history by themselves. Finding one still tied with its original tag and correct NOS contents makes this an especially unusual survivor.

This is exactly why we do what we do. It isn’t merely old inventory. It is a piece of American motorcycle history that has remained together through nearly a century.

📦 BOX #0001

Coastal Harley-Davidson was never supposed to have “Misc. Parts.”

Under my father’s careful watch, the Harley-Davidson parts system was meticulously maintained. Every part had a number. And therefore, every part had a place.

When he sold the dealership in 1998, he kept all of the obsolete Harley inventory. As it was moved into storage, the warehouse system my father had developed to keep every part organized was abandoned—unbeknownst to us.

Instead of preserving the warehouse system my father had built—with numbered box ranges and detailed inventory sheets—parts were randomly mixed together, boxes were labeled “Misc. Parts”… and, believe it or not, even “Clueless Parts.” In some cases, the boxes don’t even contain only motorcycle parts! Whether those decisions came from convenience, indifference, or something else, we’ll probably never know. What we do know is this: nearly 30 years later, those boxes won’t win or beat us. We’re identifying the parts, restoring the organization we should have always had, and preserving the history that could have disappeared if it wasn’t so important to us.

Most—probably 99%—of these boxes haven’t been opened since they were packed.

We’re going to open one box at a time. We’ll identify and document each discovery. Then, many of these parts will become available for purchase. Some for the first time in nearly 30 years. Others for the first time ever.

🎥 Join us on YouTube on August 1st as we start with Box #0001. You never know what piece of Harley history… or what completely random “clueless” item… will turn up next.
