Metallurgical engineering touches many other fields of engineering. A great example of the impact of our associations with nuclear and chemical engineering was revealed today when Jaron Wallace (senior) was selected as the winner of the 2018 American Institute of Chemical Engineers Nuclear Engineering Division student paper contest. Prof. Simpson is leading one of the 13 projects funded this year by Idaho National Laboratory to develop experiments for the planned Versatile Test Reactor. Utah's award is tied for the highest funding and features a collaboration with Prof. Phongikaroon from Virginia Commonwealth University and Prof. Sun from University of Michigan--both from leading nuclear engineering programs.

The winner of the 2018 International Mineral Processing Congress (IMPC) Lifetime Achievement Award is Jan D. Miller, Ivor D. Thomas Distinguished Professor in the Department of Metallurgical Engineering at the University of Utah. At the University of Utah, Professor Miller has devoted over 40 years to undergraduate and graduation education. His research covers mainly the areas of mineral processing and hydrometallurgy, specializing in particle characterization, aqueous solution chemistry, and colloid and surface chemistry. He is a member of SME, TMS, and ACS. The recipient of numerous honors and awards, he was elected to the National Academy of Engineering in 1993. In recent years he has become a world leader in the field of x-ray tomography in minerals processing.

Professor Ravi Chandran, Metallurgical Engineering, has recently been awarded a $440K grant, for three years, from the Department of Energy, Office of Science for the study of phase transitions in Li-ion battery electrodes. This follows a previous grant on the same subject and provides opportunities for two graduate students to continue the in situ experiments in Spallation Neutron Source at Oak Ride National
