The Sexton Corporation

The Sexton Corporation Sexton has been designing and manufacturing custom underwater products since 1968. We have a range of products but specialize in custom project development.

We specialize in developing rugged systems for underwater, surface, and nearshore applications. Custom projects require custom equipment and custom equipment can be expensive. Our business model was developed over 40 years ago to meet the need within the scientific community for both practical and prudent underwater products. At The Sexton Corporation we strive to design innovative custom equipment that meets your needs, fits your budget, and exceeds your expectations.

Meet Bumble Bee, the Hatfield Innovation Lab’s new ROV.

Bumble Bee is a shallow-water class ROV by Blue Robotics that works in waters up to 100 meters deep.

This ROV will be available as a shared instrument within the Hatfield research community and visiting researchers. It will serve as a development platform for testing prototypes of tools created in the iLab that can be attached to robotic vehicles. The ROV will also be available for community education and outreach events like the annual MATE ROV competition.

Many thanks to Ken and Adrienne Sexton, who provided financial support to purchase this instrument. Learn more about the Hatfield iLab at https://hmsc.oregonstate.edu/ilab

It’s been five years since we finished work on this 3D Cinematic Stereo Video Capture system for . Deemed the “MBARI Stereo” and designed in partnership with , this enclosure housed two Z-Cam E-2’s with fisheye lenses and chemically strengthened dome ports. Installed on Doc Ricketts ROV, this system is able to record ~180 degree cinematic stereo up to 4000 meters. Using a fiber optic data connection this system can provide low-latency feeds to both the ROV pilot and duplicate feeds for simultaneous scientific analysis.

This system was apart of the discovery of a 100,000 + year old Mammoth Tusk offshore of California at 3,700 meters! Story Below ⬇️

Last week our team at Sexton went out to Newport, OR to test our new sensing, camera, and light package for capturing in-situ images & data from inside crab traps developed with partners .

We had a successful deployment, capturing both image (first picture) and data (conductivity/salinity, depth, temperature, & dissolved oxygen) each minute of deployment. We believe that this system, in tandem with our new deck box interface, will allow crabbers & other fishers, scientists, and managers alike gain a better understanding of subsea conditions and population dynamics of key species, especially in areas not spatially represented by glider, buoy, and other conventional research instruments.

Thank you to our partners for their collaboration on this success!

This past week teamed up with Blue Robotics's Tony White to test our Canon VR Salty Surf Housings Adaptor which we developed in collaboration with Meta and our STEREOLABS ZedHead underwater stereo vision system on the BlueRov in Kona, Hawaii! It was a fantastic collaboration between our two companies, and we hope to work closer together to bring more innovative solutions into the underwater technology space.

➡ Stay tuned tomorrow for a link to our underwater VR video of Puako Turtle Cleaning Station in Kona, Hawaii!
