One thing many people outside the casting industry do not realize is that certain areas of a casting are intentionally produced larger than the final required dimensions.

This extra material is known as machining allowance.

Why?

Because machining allows critical surfaces, holes, and mounting locations to be finished to precise dimensions and tolerances after the casting process is complete.

Without machining allowance, there may not be enough material available to achieve the final specifications required by the application.

In other words, some castings are designed to be bigger before they can become exact.

It is one of the many details that goes into producing quality castings for demanding industrial applications.

🔩 𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗯𝗼𝗻 𝗦𝘁𝗲𝗲𝗹?

Carbon steel remains one of the most widely used casting materials across industrial applications for a simple reason: it delivers an excellent balance of strength, toughness, machinability, and value.

That combination makes carbon steel castings a common choice for:
• Valves and flow control equipment
• Mining and heavy equipment components
• Power generation applications
• Industrial machinery and structural components

When properly cast, heat treated, and machined, carbon steel provides the durability required for demanding service environments while remaining a cost-effective solution for many applications.

It is one of the reasons carbon steel continues to be a go-to material throughout the manufacturing world.

🔩 𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗗𝗼 𝗪𝗲 𝗞𝗲𝗲𝗽 𝗜𝗻𝘃𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴?

Over the past several months, we've shared a number of improvements taking place at Quaker City Castings.

• New equipment
• Expanded capabilities
• Process improvements
• Facility upgrades

None of those investments happen by accident.

We believe that if you want to deliver better products, you have to continually invest in the people, equipment, and processes that make those products possible.

When customers choose a foundry, they are not just choosing who pours the metal.

They are choosing a company that is committed to improving, growing, and finding better ways to serve them.

That commitment is one of the reasons Quaker City Castings continues to invest in its future.

And ultimately, that investment benefits every customer we serve.

The chemistry of a casting does not happen by accident.

Before a heat is poured, ferro alloy additions are carefully measured and weighed to help achieve the required material properties for the final casting.

Small adjustments can have a significant impact on strength, toughness, hardness, and overall performance.

That is why precision matters at every stage of the process.

This video shows a look at how ferro alloy additions are prepared at Quaker City Castings before they become part of the melt.

Complex castings like these can combine multiple mounting points, support structures, load-bearing features, and functional surfaces into a single component, reducing the need for additional fabrication and assembly.

The result is fewer parts, fewer welds, and a more efficient manufacturing process from start to finish.

Castings like these are commonly used in large-scale flow control systems where massive volumes of water, wastewater, slurries, or industrial fluids need to be directed through pipelines safely and efficiently.

𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗼𝗻𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝘀𝘂𝗰𝗵 𝗮𝘀 𝘃𝗮𝗹𝘃𝗲 𝗯𝗼𝗱𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝘆 𝗮 𝗰𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗿𝗼𝗹𝗲 𝗶𝗻:
• Starting and stopping flow
• Directing flow through a system
• Isolating sections of a pipeline
• Managing pressure throughout the process

Whether the application is municipal water, wastewater treatment, power generation, mining, or industrial processing, these castings become part of the infrastructure that keeps essential systems operating every day.

At Quaker City Castings, we produce iron and steel castings for demanding applications where reliability matters.

The properties of a casting are heavily influenced by what happens after the pour.

Depending on the material and process used, controlled heat treatment can increase steel hardness by more than 2x while also improving:
• Toughness
• Wear resistance
• Mechanical performance

That is exactly why Quaker City Castings continues reinvesting into heat treatment capabilities and process control.

From controlled furnace temperatures to water quenching systems, heat treatment plays a major role in producing steel castings built for demanding industrial applications where performance matters.

The pour is only the beginning. What happens after is just as important.

Producing steel castings is about more than pouring molten metal into a mold.

Quality control happens throughout the entire process, from material verification and process monitoring to inspection and testing after the casting is produced.

In demanding industrial applications, consistency and reliability matter. That is why quality control plays such a major role throughout the casting process.
