One of the U.S. military's most widely used chemical decontaminants wasn't a powder or a wipe—it was a powerful liquid known as Decontamination Solution No. 2 (DS2).

Introduced in the 1960s, DS2 was designed to neutralize chemical warfare agents on vehicles, weapons, and equipment. It earned a reputation for being highly effective, but there was a tradeoff: the solution was also highly corrosive, capable of damaging paint, plastics, rubber, electronics, and even irritating the skin of those handling it.

As military technology evolved, so did decontamination methods. By the early 2000s, the U.S. military began replacing DS2 with newer systems that were less corrosive, safer to handle, and better suited for modern equipment.

Today, decontamination solutions continue to evolve, with an emphasis on effectiveness, portability, and protecting both the user and the equipment.

From caustic chemical solutions to today's advanced decontamination technologies, the mission has remained the same: reduce the hazard and get back to safety.
