Introducing the LightObject Semi-X Fiber Laser Cutter

After working with both open-type and fully enclosed fiber laser systems for many years, we asked ourselves a simple question:
Can we combine the convenience of an open machine with the fume-control advantages of an enclosed machine?

That is the idea behind our new LightObject Semi-X.
Traditional open fiber laser cutters are lightweight, fast, easy to load and unload, and provide excellent access to the cutting table. However, smoke and fume extraction can be a major challenge.
Fully enclosed systems provide better containment and operator protection, but they are larger, heavier, more expensive, more costly to ship, and less convenient for loading sheets and collecting finished parts.

Semi-X takes a different approach.
Instead of enclosing the entire machine, Semi-X uses a covered moving gantry that encloses the active cutting area. The enclosure travels together with the cutting process, helping contain smoke and allowing the extraction system to capture fumes closer to where they are generated.

There is always a trade-off. The enclosure adds some weight to the moving gantry, so maximum speed and acceleration are lower than those of a very lightweight open-gantry design.
Semi-X isn't designed to replace every open or fully enclosed fiber laser. Each design has its advantages.
Our goal is to offer another practical choice that combines open-table accessibility with localized fume containment.

Open vs. Fully Enclosed vs. Semi-X Fiber Laser — Which Design Is Better?
There is no perfect design. Each has its own advantages and trade-offs depending on production needs, shop space, safety requirements, and budget.

🔹 OPEN-TYPE FIBER LASER
Pros:
✅ Easy material loading and unloading
✅ Easy access for collecting finished parts
✅ Easy maintenance and cleaning
✅ Smaller footprint
✅ Lower machine weight
✅ Lower purchase and shipping cost
✅ Faster/easier installation
✅ Lightweight gantry allows high acceleration and cutting speed
Cons:
❌ Smoke and fume control can be challenging
❌ Less containment of sparks and cutting debris
❌ Lower level of operator protection compared with a fully enclosed system

🔹 FULLY ENCLOSED FIBER LASER
Pros:
✅ Highest level of operator protection
✅ Excellent smoke and fume containment
✅ Better control of sparks and cutting debris
✅ Well suited for high-power and high-production environments
Cons:
❌ More difficult to load/unload material and collect parts
❌ Less convenient access to the cutting table
❌ Larger footprint
❌ Heavier machine
❌ Higher manufacturing and purchase cost
❌ Higher shipping cost
❌ Longer production/assembly time
❌ Installation can require more labor

🔹 SEMI-X — MOVING GANTRY ENCLOSURE
Our Semi-X takes a different approach: instead of enclosing the entire machine, we enclose the cutting area and move the enclosure with the gantry.
Pros:
✅ Open-table convenience for material loading and parts collection
✅ Localized smoke/fume capture close to the cutting point
✅ Easier access for maintenance and cleaning
✅ Smaller footprint than a fully enclosed machine
✅ Less overall machine weight
✅ Lower manufacturing and shipping cost than a full enclosure
✅ Combines many benefits of an open machine with improved fume containment
Trade-offs:
❌ Moving enclosure adds weight to the gantry
❌ Maximum acceleration/speed may be somewhat lower than a comparable open gantry
❌ More mechanically complex than a basic open machine
❌ Does not provide the same complete isolation as a fully enclosed system
The idea behind Semi-X is simple:
👉 Enclose the cutting process — not the entire machine.
