The new Student Services Building at Evergreen Valley College is taking its final shape! This iconic complex will serve as the new gateway to the college, consolidating student services that are currently scattered throughout the campus. Although it visually reads as a single building, the complex is actually two distinct structures with different lateral systems, separated by a seismic joint. Buehler is proud to have partnered with DLR Group and XL Construction on this exciting project and we are looking forward to its anticipated completion in early 2024!

After 18 months of intensive design, Buehler is excited to share that construction has officially started at Cal Poly’s Kennedy Library! Located on the San Luis Obispo campus, the much-anticipated renovation includes significant voluntary seismic improvements, new exterior glazing, a fully reprogrammed and renovated Level 1, updated interior spaces, and a new iconic central circulation stair. With HENSEL PHELPS and Miller Hull leading the design-build team for the project, construction is scheduled to be completed by the Fall term of 2025!

Sierra College recently held its grand opening celebration for its new instructional building, Building Q! The three-story structure is designed to house 60% of on-campus classes and includes generous breakout spaces, locations for students to gather between classes, and a high-volume lobby with incredible views of the neighboring greenbelt. Exposed braced frames blend seamlessly with the striking exterior metal finishes and the large storefront windows that bring in ample amounts of natural light. Constructed during the pandemic, Balfour Beatty US and HMC Architects expertly navigated the challenges to remain on schedule and deliver the building as student demand returned.

The new Pedestrian Bridge at Washington Hospital in Fremont, CA is in! This new elevated 180-foot patient connector corridor provides direct access for patients and transport between the existing Center for Joint Replacement building and the Morris Hyman Critical Care Pavilion. The bridge significantly improves the patient experience by eliminating exterior exposure. This steel box truss bridge was shop-fabricated in two sections to minimize disruption to the hospital open around the clock. The pre-fabrication approach also trimmed the construction schedule significantly and reduced field installation time. Shout out to Rudolph and Sletten, Inc. for piecing it together without a hitch!

Each year, Buehler onboards multiple interns to give them an opportunity to learn about the industry and gain valuable experience. Not only do our interns help with important tasks, they also have opportunities to connect with all levels of staff, receive hands-on job training, and get exclusive tours of our projects. This year, our interns visited the Golden One Center, the Resources Building Renovation, Kaiser Roseville Bed Tower Expansion, and the Railyards Paint Shop, giving them a well-rounded look at the types of projects we work on. We recently celebrated our interns with a going away lunch to wish them well on the next part of their journey!

Buehler’s own Ryan Kersting recently had the honor to address the White House! Ryan participated in an online presentation for the Executive Office of the President as part of a select group of national experts. The presentation titled "Our Nation’s Seismic Risk" covered topics such as the latest estimates of earthquake risk to US communities and suggested actions that can be taken by Congress. Recognized as an expert based on efforts within California and with various Federal agencies, Ryan’s focus has been on the emerging topic of designing buildings for improved post-earthquake Functional Recovery in support of better community resilience. Buehler is proud of Ryan’s trailblazing in our industry and celebrates this incredible opportunity!

Held at Urban Roots Brewery in downtown Sacramento, the event will include house-made beers and a conversation on sustainable design using mass timber, featuring Buehler President Scott Ho**er as one of the panelists.

Our Buehler team, along with several of our team partners had a great time at Phoenix Canstruction Build Day this past weekend! Our “Star Spangled Squad” included Arizona Masonry Council, Archsol, ATI Restoration, LLC., Sun Valley Masonry AZ, Waltz Construction, Superlite Block, Anasazi Stone Company, Inc. Scottsdale, Van Boerum & Frank, and Bashas' Supermarkets (on 7th St. and Union Hills.) All cans used to make each build will be donated to St. Mary's Food Bank making it their single largest food drive! Also, each dollar donated towards your favorite structure counts as a vote with all proceeds going directly to St. Mary's Food Bank.

The final shape of the Resources Building Renovation in downtown Sacramento is coming into focus! This renovation includes the strengthening of the lateral and foundation systems along with the complete replacement of the stairs and elevators to update the accessibility of the building from top to bottom. The old exterior facade is halfway removed, exposing some of the newly installed fluid viscous damper bracing system provided by Taylor Devices, which retrofit the existing truss moment frame system designed in the 1960s. With construction moving right along, we are looking forward to unveiling this striking River City rehab!
