Happy “Birthday” to The Chef!
59 YEARS — 1967–2026
September 5, 1967.
One of the fastest-growing restaurant franchises in America opened its newest location at 126 Keith Street in Cleveland, Tennessee.
It was Burger Chef Store #327.
Burger Chef would eventually grow to more than 1,200 locations across the country. But as the years passed, Burger Chef disappeared. Restaurants closed and signs came down.
But #327 never did.
When the Burger Chef sign came down here at midnight, the doors opened the next day as The Chef. The grills stayed hot, and a new chapter began.
For 59 years, Cleveland has kept coming back.
You’ve brought your children here and watched them grow up and bring children of their own. There have been first dates, marriage proposals, breakfasts before work, burgers after ballgames, and countless memories made inside these walls.
We’ve continued Cleveland’s tradition of Hot Slaw, using Star-Vue’s original equipment for the past 48 years. We’ve watched the story of Hot Slaw reach The New York Times, brought home trophies, and most recently were honored by you as #1 for biscuits in Bradley County.
Those awards mean the world to us, but as cliché as it may sound—
it IS the people.
The hundreds of employees who have worked here. The generations of customers we’ve had the privilege of serving. The people I see around town and realize I know their order before I know their name. 😂
Owning The Chef doesn’t make this history mine.
I’m simply the current caretaker of something Cleveland built.
People before me worked incredibly hard to keep these doors open. My dad’s 43 years here were a massive part of why The Chef is still here today. Hopefully generations after us will continue doing the same.
A restaurant doesn’t survive 59 years because of a building, a sign, or even because it’s run well. The number of restaurants I’ve personally watched come and go over the years is incredible.
It survives because a community decides it’s worth keeping.
And Cleveland, you’ve made that decision for 59 years.
There have been amazing years, and there have been some hard ones.
Yet you guys have remained consistent. You kept coming back.
From Burger Chef #327 in 1967 to The Chef in 2026:
Thank you, Cleveland and Bradley County, for 59 years.
More than 1,200 Burger Chefs once stood across America.
This one never closed its doors.
Thinking about that still gives me cold chills.
Happy Birthday to The Chef. I’ve never known life without it.
59 Years. Your Hometown Favorite.
