📚🧡 September is Literacy Awareness Month, and we’re celebrating by reading together!

Did you know? Research from the Million Word Gap study estimated that reading just ONE picture book a day can expose a child to about 78,000 words from books in one year.

And yes! The same favorite book counts! 📖✨

Reading a beloved story again…and again creates more opportunities to hear words, anticipate familiar phrases, explore pictures, participate in the story, and connect through language.

Whether you’re reading during speech therapy, in the classroom, or together at home, those little moments can add up to something pretty powerful. 💬

🔁 Share this post to help us celebrate Literacy Awareness Month and encourage another family, SLP, teacher, or caregiver to pick up a book today!

👇 Then tell us: What is your child’s, student’s, or client’s FAVORITE book right now?

Let’s fill the comments with recommendations! 📚🧡

“Excuse me. Please wait.” ‼️ - Stephanie Cooper | Ellie Strong

As SLPs, these are the moments that get us. 🧡

AAC isn’t about teaching someone how to request a favorite item or activity. It’s about making sure AAC users have access to the language they need to advocate for themselves in real life. 💬✨

To say:
🗣️ Wait.
🗣️ Stop.
🗣️ No.
🗣️ My turn.
🗣️ I have something to say.

Ellie’s message is such a simple, powerful example of why empowering communicators is so important.

Inspired by moments like Ellie’s, we created a FREE, SLP-created Self-Advocacy + AAC handout with practical vocabulary and strategies you can use when modeling self-advocacy with your AAC users.

💬 Comment WAIT and we’ll send you Ellie’s self-advocacy page + the free download!
