This beautiful 19th-century barn had been in the client’s family for generations and badly needed refurbishment. She wanted to restore and transform it into a mixed-used space, including room for her 5 horses.

In older barns like this, it can be tough to find stalls that work with the rest of the space, so Blackwood created custom stalls and windows. Choosing custom stalls lets you give your horses exactly what they need while staying true to the aesthetic of your barn.

If you’re replacing existing stall fronts and doors, choose styles that work with the rest of your space in terms of aesthetic and functionality. For example, a narrow aisle will likely require sliding doors, while swinging doors are a nice touch in barns with more space.

Metal grill dividers allow horses to see one another, while solid dividers create a calm, private space. A good compromise is to design a stall divider that is solid on the bottom half (using wood or concrete) with a metal grill on top. When socialization is not desired, a drop-in divider can be used.
