1. Caroline Herschel is remembered as the first professional female astronomer, whose most significant contributions to astronomy were the discoveries of several comets.
2. Maria Mitchell became the first female Astronomy Professor in 1865.
3. Nancy Grace Roman is best remembered for being the first Chief of Astronomy in the Office of Space Science at NASA Headquarters, and the first women to hold an executive position at the space agency. Her nickname is, “Mother of Hubble”, due to her managing the world-famous Hubble Space Telescope.
4. Barbara Ann Williams is an American Radio Astronomer and the first African-American women to earn a PhD in Astronomy (University of Maryland, Collage Park, 1981).
5. Henrietta Swan Leavitt discovered the period-luminosity relationship. This relationship is critical because it tells us the longer the pulsation period, the more luminous the star.
