From the Penny to the Powerhouse: What We Do at Georgia Machine Works
In the world of precision machining, there are companies that specialize in the small stuff—tight tolerances, delicate threads, parts you can hold between your fingers. Then there are companies that handle the big stuff—massive industrial components, heavy rolls, and shafts that take cranes just to lift.
At Georgia Machine Works, we do both.
From a component smaller than a penny to a 60,000-pound industrial roll, we machine, fabricate, repair, and rebuild parts that keep critical operations running—locally and around the world.
And the best part? We do it right here in Rome, Georgia.
---
Why That Matters
Because whether you’re running a high-speed bottling line, a paper mill, a power plant, a construction fleet, or a sawmill—there’s one thing your equipment has in common:
It breaks.
Sometimes slowly. Sometimes suddenly.
But when it does, downtime gets expensive—fast.
That’s where we come in.
---
Precision Matters—No Matter the Size
You’ve probably heard the phrase “close enough for government work.” We don’t use it here.
Whether we’re threading a part smaller than your pinky nail or re-machining a bearing journal on a 30-foot roll, the standard is the same:
Get it right. Make it last. Do it fast.
The Small Stuff
Take a look at the image here. That tiny, perfectly threaded part next to a penny isn’t some trinket—it’s a real, functioning component we machined. Something that small, if it’s even a few thousandths off, won’t work. It might leak, strip, seize, or fail at the worst possible moment.
That’s why our machinists are trained not just to use the machines—but to understand the job, the fit, the function, and the consequences of poor work.
Small parts need tight tolerances, clean finishes, and a sharp eye for detail. Whether we’re cutting threads, drilling micro-holes, or polishing sealing surfaces, we treat it like it’s the only part that matters—because for our customer, it probably is.
---
The Big Stuff
Now contrast that with the roll you see suspended from an overhead crane—a 60,000 lb beast of a component, often used in the paper, steel, or energy industry. You don’t just throw that on a table and hit “cycle start.” These jobs require:
Rigging and handling equipment most shops don’t have
Large-capacity lathes and turning centers
Heavy-duty fixtures, supports, and tooling
And most importantly, experienced machinists who’ve done it before
These parts come to us worn, cracked, or distorted. Sometimes the journals are out of round. Sometimes a previous repair failed. And more often than not, the customer is already down—or dangerously close.
Our job?
Diagnose. Fix. Balance. Rebuild. Deliver.

We Don’t Just Machine Metal—We Solve Problems
At GMW, we see a lot of equipment that other shops won’t touch—or can’t. Customers bring us projects with statements like:
“The OEM lead time is 14 weeks.”
“Nobody makes this anymore.”
“We can’t afford to shut down for a month.”
“We don’t have a drawing, just this broken part.”
“Can you have it done by Monday?”
And our answer, more often than not, is:
“Let’s take a look.”
That mindset is why customers keep coming back. It’s also why we’ve had the chance to work on equipment used in industries like:
Pulp & paper (rollers, dryers, press shafts)
Food & beverage (bottling/can lines, mixers, conveyors)
Power generation (impellers, pumps, turbine components)
Manufacturing (presses, dies, housings)
Construction & forestry (bushings, custom pins, loader arms, stump grinders)
Some of our parts go on ships. Others on skids. Some spin at thousands of RPM. Others weigh more than most vehicles. What they all have in common is this:
They can’t fail.

Big or Small—We’re Built for It
That part next to the penny?
It had to be exact.
That 60,000 lb roll?
It had to be safe, straight, and reliable.
We don’t choose between big or small. We take pride in the full spectrum—because every part matters to someone.
So whether you're:
A mill manager with a critical roller out of round
A maintenance supervisor tired of waiting for parts
A contractor who needs something built or machined ASAP
Or someone looking to build a future in the trades...
We’re here.
We’re ready.
And we’re proud of the work we do—one part at a time.
