Tate team members often find themselves working in confined spaces during the tank fabrication process. Limited ventilation, difficult entry and exit, exposure to hazardous material, and other factors may pose serious safety risks to workers not adequately trained to navigate such conditions. That's why we take extra safety precautions, including requiring our team members to complete specialized training in our Confined Space Safety Protocol.

This protocol outlines the necessary steps to ensure worker safety, including identifying and evaluating confined spaces, developing appropriate entry permits, providing proper training and equipment, and establishing emergency procedures. Our teams are trained how to effectively communicate and continuously monitor conditions during confined space entries.

The goal of such a program is to prevent accidents and injuries by promoting a safe and controlled approach to working in these types of spaces. Safety is our top priority, we make sure our team is equipped and trusted to do so.

We always recommend Duplex Stainless Steel when our clients are often looking for a high-quality, cost-efficient material that offers excellent corrosion resistance properties and reliability for years to come.

This is because Duplex steels offer combination of high tensile strengths and excellent corrosion resistance properties. The higher tensile strength of duplex steels allows for the use of thinner materials and ultimately leads to a less expensive Storage Tank or process vessel. This threshold is often crossed when the design conditions of your process are driving the thickness up.

At Tate Metalworks, the fabrication, welding, and construction of duplex steels is one of our specialties. Our expertise in duplex welded steel tanks and vessels is the result of over 50 years of experience and numerous successful projects from shop-built digesters and field erected clarifiers to ASME reactors and API storage tanks. We have a proven record across many industries.

We are experts on engineered heavy lifts, and getting our clients' equipment in place safely and efficiently without disruption to their plant operations. Sizing cranes, checking site layouts, and delivery and lift logistics are all part of what we do best.

This project for a longstanding Tate Metalworks customer was no different! As part of this scope, our team delivered a new process vessel within a short construction window. It was fabricated in four sub-assemblies at our facility in Roebuck, SC and then delivered to the client's site, where our field teams erected it within five days. When complete, the tank measured 10’6” in diameter and 150’ in height and was constructed from 304 stainless steel.

This required excellent collaboration with our client’s technical staff, General Contractor, technology provider, and our professional engineers and construction experts. Our team executed this lift plan and sequence with no safety incidents or issues and met the tight schedule deadline. Tate has decades of experience with planning and executing complex lifts like this one, utilizing an array of crane types and configurations, saving our client valuable production time.

There's nothing better than a satisfied customer, and we'll take any chance we get to brag on the skill of our shop and field crews. Great work, Tate Team!

For more than fifty years, Tate Metalworks has been an industry leading supplier of both API-650 and API-620 storage tanks and ASME pressure vessels fabricated and erected from stainless steel. But why stainless steel? We see several key benefits to using this material:

Strength and Durability: Stainless steel is known for longevity and corrosion resistance. It can also withstand extreme temperatures and maintain structural integrity over time, requiring lower maintenance and making it a long-term cost-effective option.

Cleanliness: Tanks made of stainless steel are easy to clean and maintain, which is crucial for industries like food and beverage, pharmaceuticals, and healthcare where cleanliness is critical.

Versatility: Stainless steel tanks can easily be customized to store a wide range of substances including water, chemicals, food products, pharmaceuticals, and beverages without compromising the quality or safety of the material.

Recyclability: Stainless steel is a recyclable metal, which supports sustainability efforts and reduces environmental impact.

During these hot summer months, excessive heat can pose serious safety concerns when working in the environments the Tate team encounters on a daily basis. That's why we take heat safety and awareness seriously and train each of our supervisors and employees to recognize the signs of overheating and the measures to take to avoid them both in the shop and in the field.

Aside from the body overheating and increasing fatigue, heat also tends to increase the risk of accidents due to factors like the slipperiness of sweaty palms, dizziness, the fogging of safety glasses, etc. Due to these dangers, the frequency of accidents in general appears to be higher in hotter environments.

Preventive measures and adequate protection can reduce the risk of overheating, heat stress, and heat exhaustion. Here are some Tate safety tips to help keep your workers safe this summer:

-Ensure adequate breaks in a source of shade for employees working outdoors, such as a tent or other canopy, access to a cooled building/structure, and by limiting the amount of time workers are in direct sunlight.
- Always provide a water source for adequate hydration. A worker may produce as much as 2 to 3 gallons of sweat on any given job site. Because so many heat disorders involve excessive dehydration of the body, it is essential that water intake during the workday be about equal to the amount of sweat produced. Workers should drink 5 to 7 ounces of fluids every 15 to 20 minutes to replenish the necessary fluids in the body.
- Wear proper clothing. Clothing inhibits the transfer of heat between the body and the surrounding environment. Therefore, in hot jobs where the air temperature is lower than skin temperature, wearing clothing reduces the body's ability to lose heat into the air. When air temperature is higher than skin temperature, clothing helps to prevent the transfer of heat from the air to the body. In a dry work environment with very high air temperatures, protective clothing could be an advantage to the worker. The proper type of clothing depends on the specific circumstance.

Tate Metalworks was recently contracted by one of our longstanding partners to replace a one million gallon field-erected tank. The original tank was made of carbon steel, and after many years in service its corrosion led to thinning in the shell courses. Our client decided to replace it with corrosive-resistant stainless steel.

First the old tank had to be carefully cut down by our preferred vendor. Then we went to work on the 55’ diameter x 60’ shell height API 650 tank, and the end result is a beautiful 304 stainless steel tank for another satisfied customer.
