Apex is supporting the Lehigh Acres Municipal Services Improvement District on the hydrologic design of a new water storage facility aimed at reducing downstream flooding and improving water quality in the Caloosahatchee River estuary.

The project includes two gated weirs and a bypass structure designed to safely convey excess flows during extreme rainfall events. Once implemented, the system will help lower water levels in Bedman Creek, an area that has experienced recurring flooding, while reducing pollutant discharges to the estuary.

Using the integrated MIKE SHE/MIKE 11 surface and groundwater modeling platform, our team evaluated complex gate operations and groundwater responses under varying conditions. Modeling of a 2017 hurricane scenario showed a significant reduction in peak flows in Bedman Creek, from 1,227 to 863 cubic feet per second, a 30% decrease.

We're helping bring to life a new grade-separated diamond interchange, building on a 2019 study to replace the current at-grade intersection. This interchange will significantly enhance safety, streamline traffic flow, and boost regional connectivity with seamless access to US 12.

Their work turns thousands of data points into meaningful visuals that help our engineers and scientists plan, permit, and make confident field decisions.

Recently, our GIS team developed stormwater figures for hundreds of sites across the United States for a national commercial client. These figures highlight stormwater assets and conveyance pathways to help identify potential surface water discharge during rain events, while providing inspectors with a clear and consistent tool for field verification. By standardizing these visuals across all locations, GIS streamlines workflows, strengthens compliance, and enhances accuracy on every site.

In her presentation, Maria will highlight how hydraulic modeling, real-time water-level data collection, and improved dam operations can help communities achieve immediate flood relief, while infrastructure upgrades like culvert replacements and reducing impervious surface build lasting climate resilience.
