At Pierce, we’re always trying to look to the future of our industry.

Michael P. Collins is President of MPC Management, a consulting company that focuses on the problems and challenges of small and midsize manufacturers of industrial products. In this article, he shares his thoughts on why investments into automation should be coupled with investments in employee training and education.

Invest in your people. We’re inspired to continue to invest in ours.

American companies rushed to invest in automation, but not the training needed to operate, maintain, troubleshoot and repair the equipment.

You see something that’s broken. We see the opportunity to remanufacture it.

Parts that have been used, worn, and are hanging onto their last bit of life are the best candidates for remanufacturing. In this process, we disassemble the product, clean the parts, and then choose whether we’ll reuse, replace, or repair them based on their condition. The parts are then reassembled and tested for functionality, resulting in a product (or sub-assembly of a product) being returned to like-new condition.

When designing your industrial rollers, we use either inertia friction welding or cylindrical roll forming.

Inertia friction welding allows us to fuse 2 separate metals. When it comes to rollers, we can easily weld a gudgeon onto a tube, creating your roller with minimal manual labor and virtually no wasted material.

Pictured is an example of inertia friction welding. Instead of starting with a solid piece of material and machining off quite a bit of material, we can take individual pieces that are already to spec and fuse them together.

Industrial rollers are typically manufactured in one of three ways.

A solid thru-shaft roller includes machining the shaft, machining the discs, manually welding the discs to the shaft, and then manually welding the shaft once it’s been positioned in the tube. While this process works, it involves a lot of manual labor and materials.

Another method is a press-fit, which requires the machining of end caps and a tube, and then press-fitting the end caps onto the tube. This method requires fewer parts and machine time than the solid thru-shaft method.

A solid core roller is a single piece of material; the rollers are machined at each end of the solid core. While this method requires the fewest pieces and machine time, there’s quite a bit of wasted material in the solid core component.

When we design our rollers, we eliminate as much material, machine time, and manual labor as possible by using one of two methods: inertia friction welding or cylindrical roll forming.

“Mars is there, waiting to be reached.” -Buzz Aldrin

Today, NASA’s vehicle Atlas V-401 will land on Mars for InSight, a discovery mission to learn about the interior of the planet.

Hey NASA: if you need rollers, ours are out of this world!
