For more than 20 years, LaBella has partnered with Greenwood County, SC, to provide solid waste engineering services at their Class Three landfill by helping them plan for today while designing for the future.
LaBella led the design and construction of Cell 4, a 12-acre addition to the site, that reflects both technical precision and long-term sustainability while minimizing construction costs for the Greenwood County SC Government. LaBella redesigned Cells 4-8 (previously designed by others) to lower base grades, reduce benches, increase landfill height, and maximize overall facility disposal capacity.
This optimization included reorienting cells to improve efficiency and increase disposal capacity per acre of constructed liner by increasing the piggyback surface area per cell. As a result, the facility was able to construct smaller cells with no reduction in cell life. LaBella also proactively designed future sitework infrastructure, including sediment basins, to support the future expansion of Cells 5-8. In addition, the team integrated systems to control leachate and limit rainwater infiltration.
Simultaneously, LaBella minimized construction costs by conducting an extensive borrow study to quantify onsite clay and a seismic survey to identify the depth and extent of bedrock. By leveraging our familiarity with the site, performing in-depth site investigations, and collaborating closely with the County, LaBella minimized construction change orders and kept the project under budget.
