2013 - G&Z is the first in the slipform paver industry to introduce Telematics, which works in conjunction with their EGON Control System. The EGON Telematics operator display gives an all-in-one overview of the paver’s I/O (inputs and outputs), system faults, hydraulic pump pressure/filter conditions (clog monitoring with alarm), fuel level, individual forward/reverse track pressure, along with the current machine mode and configuration. The EGON “Telematics” system also features a powerful remote diagnostics/monitoring software in real-time via Wi-Fi, GSM, or GPS technology. The web-based remote user interface allows the ability to download program updates, remotely monitoring, equipment location and data logs, along with diagnostics and troubleshooting. The system can also provide service reminders and email notifications to the customer. G&Z’s EGON Telematics takes machine connectivity and service to the next level.

2012 - G&Z introduces a Swing Leg (SL) version of their very popular S850 Quadra Bolster (QB) Mid-size Slipform Paver, first introduced in 1996. The S850SL features G&Z’s patented SmartLeg / AccuSteer technology first introduced and popularized on the S600 Paver. The SL version of the S850 offers the same smooth ride, maneuverability, ease of width change, and ease of transport of the S850QB, but offers the narrowest profile mid-size slipform paver in the industry. With special narrow track pads on one side, the S850SL Paver, with or without a DBI (with bolster extensions), can walk on a concrete companion lane with as little as 12” of room from edge of pavement to the toe of the temporary barrier wall.

"Timeline Series" - Post 19/56

2011 - G&Z files their first “SmartLeg / AccuSteer” Patent, which is granted in 2013 that revolutionizes how four-track concrete slipform pavers are steered and maneuvered. The system features a hydraulically actuated swing leg with an angular transducer and a slew drive on top of each crawler track yoke with a second transducer to measure track angle. Together, they allow automatic steering correction and “on-the-fly” lateral shifting of the crawler tracks under load to maneuver around obstacles while maintaining perfect alignment. This eliminates the need for stopping the paver, manual bolster adjustments, or steering transducer resets, greatly reducing time required to relocate the crawler tracks or to transition between paving and transport modes. This innovation quickly becomes the most copied technologies in the industry.

S400 Series Post #4: Next Gen Hardware & Software
Smarter Controls. Faster Diagnostics. More Productive Paving.

Today’s paving environment demands more than horsepower and hydraulics. Contractors need machine intelligence that improves uptime, simplifies diagnostics, and keeps crews productive. That’s exactly what the upgraded G&Z S400 was engineered to deliver.

At the center of the system is G&Z’s modular software architecture — designed for performance today and scalability for future technologies.

• Plug-and-play capability for future integration
• Simplified software updates and system expansion
• Modular hardware design that improves serviceability and reduces spare parts inventory

The upgraded S400 also incorporates advanced diagnostic and telematics capabilities through the EGON Operator Control System:

• Wireless global cellular connectivity
• Remote Wi-Fi access for software updates, diagnostics, and parameter adjustments
• Bluetooth-ready local connectivity
• CAN bridging for communication between the paver and attachments• Real-time monitoring of machine status, fault codes, and maintenance intervals

For contractors and fleet managers, that means faster diagnostics, reduced service trips, and more informed maintenance planning.

Operator productivity was also a major focus of the hardware redesign. The improved BP-2 wireless Belly Pack control console and display features:

• Improved switch and k**b spacing with enhanced tactile feel
• Touch-activated LED illuminated controls for low-light paving
• Integrated fault clearing, work light control, and engine idle selection
• “Night Mode” display for reduced eye strain during night operation
• Magnetic docking and charging station
• Ruggedized console construction with lockable Fold-and-Stow enclosure

The updated user interface also streamlines machine automation by accelerating track movement during machine transitions and automatically skipping completed or unnecessary steps.

Improved waterproof remote ground control corner boxes with illuminated controls further enhance operator convenience and visibility during low-light operation. Combined with the S400’s simplified hydraulic architecture and reduced component count, the result is a machine that’s easier to operate, easier to maintain, and more productive on the jobsite. The S400’s new upgrades are about reducing downtime, improving operator efficiency, and lowering operating cost over the life of the machine.

The new S400 isn’t just smarter…it’s engineered to help contractors pave more profitably.

2010 - G&Z launches the S600 Slipform Paver, creating an entirely new “Hybrid Class” in the paving industry. The S600 is built around a multi-purpose tractor frame, making it ideal for a wide range of applications—single or dual-lane paving of city streets, secondary roads, ramps, shoulders, as well as mainline highway and thick airfield paving—without sacrificing pavement smoothness. The tractor frame design also enables barrier wall and offset paving in both the paving and transport modes, while maintaining the narrowest machine profile in its class. The S600’s patented features revolutionize the industry, redefining maneuverability, quick width change capability, and speed of transformation into transport mode. The G&Z S600 quickly becomes the machine that every other paver manufacturer copies in order to remain relevant in the industry.

2009.2 - G&Z teams up with Leica Geosystems and Flynn Construction (Dubuque, Iowa) to place the smoothest concrete ever achieved anywhere using Leica Total Station stringless technology using a G&Z S850 Paver. On its 10.5 mi. (16.8 km) Highway 65 demonstration project near Mason City, Iowa, Flynn earns 100% of the available smoothness bonus and does zero grinding under the very strict Iowa zero blanking band specification. Since the fall of 2009, G&Z and Leica Geosystems successfully start up multiple stringless installations around the United States. G&Z and Leica Geosystems commit to taking this relatively new technology for the concrete paving industry to a new level of excellence.

S400 Series Post #3: Hydraulic System Redesign: Smarter, Simpler, and More Efficient

In our last S400 series post, we highlighted how the upgraded S400 power unit improves fuel efficiency and reduces wasted horsepower.

The next step is just as important…How that power is used.
The upgraded S400 hydraulic system was engineered specifically for this class of paver with a focus on efficiency, simplicity, simplifying maintenance and consistent performance using proven, high-quality components. At the core is an innovative single-circuit open-loop hydraulic system capable of operating at two distinct pressure settings on demand.

This streamlined architecture delivers several key advantages:

• Pump Reduction: Only two pumps, a primary and a secondary mounted directly off a simple engine flywheel adapter, supply all operational flow requirements
• Heat & Power Savings: Eliminating standby pump losses reduces system heat, conserves engine power, and improves fuel economy
• Simplified Filtration: Three hydraulic filters, a high-efficiency pressure filter, a return filter, and a motor case drain filter, protect all system flow paths while simplifying service and optimizing tank size
• Serviceability: Fewer components, improved access, and dedicated diagnostic ports make troubleshooting faster and maintenance more straightforward

What does this mean in the field?

• Lower fuel consumption and operating cost per cubic yard
• Reduced heat-related wear and fewer hydraulic issues
• Faster diagnostics and simplified maintenance
• More consistent uptime in demanding paving conditions

For contractors running older machines in this class, the difference shows up quickly.
The upgraded S400 isn’t just more efficient…it’s engineered to make better use of every horsepower available.

"Timeline Series" - Post 16/56

2009 - G&Z introduced its patented TeleEnds: Telescopic Paving Kit End Sections which dramatically reduce the time required to change paving widths without sacrificing pavement smoothness. G&Z TeleEnds allow the contractor to rapidly perform paving kit width changes without removing bolts, use of a crane, or adjustment. Each TeleEnd gives the contractor 3 ft. (1 m) of quick width change capability per side or 6 ft. (2 m) for both sides. A width change that would typically take a four person crew no less than 6 to 10 hours can now be performed by a one or two person crew in under two hours. Today, G&Z offers TeleEndXLs with 4 ft. (1.25 m) of telescopic ability per side and TeleEndXXLs with 7 ft. (2 m) per side.

2005 - G&Z successfully introduces its PS1200 Placer Spreader which can spread concrete at high production rates at widths of up to approx. 40 ft. (12.5 m). The four track, G&Z PS1200 is self-loading and can be transported in a single truckload. It is provided with a powerful, low profile 64 in. (1626 mm) wide roll-in / roll-out belt, that rapidly receives and spreads each concrete load dumped. Depending on the batch size, hourly production rates between 300 to 500 cyd/hr (228 - 380 m3/hr) can be achieved. A patented strike off relocation feature allows the dump side of the machine to be changed in a couple hours.
