Before and after photo of a Thomson ball screw rebuild we completed today from our customer’s Accu-Router CNC router. Since the ball return tubes had started to split apart (see right photo) we machined replacement tubes and clamps which are much more durable, to replace the originals.

Mazak Nexus Ball Screw Repair:

We recently completed the rebuild of a Z axis ball screw assembly from a Mazak Nexus 6800 ii CNC Horizontal Machining Center. Upon receipt and evaluation of the screw we measured up to .0017" axial backlash. Post rebuild and testing, this NSK ball screw assembly passed our quality inspection for lead accuracy, axial and radial runout, and preload torque for C3 accuracy. http://www.superiorballscrewrepair.com

Garnet Power for CNC Waterjet Cutters:

Garnet, believed by some to have mystical healing powers, is also the most popular abrasive used in waterjet cutting. There are various superstitions and beliefs about garnet, including the belief that wearing it will bring good business fortune and health, and increase devotion to friends and family, but the fact that garnet is so hard, makes it a great abrasive when mixed with water to cut harder substances like steel.

Of course, garnet, which is a group of rock-forming minerals, has a variety of forms besides the gem, but the form used with waterjet cutters is the most popular abrasive because when it is fractured it has jagged edges which improve cutting ability. According to Flow International Corp., the world’s largest producer of CNC waterjets, garnet is also preferred because of its cost, cutting speed, mixing tube life, and lack of health hazards. Garnet, which is found all over the world, is relatively chemically inert so it does not react with most substances. Flow machines are equipped with both water-only cutting heads for softer materials in addition to heads for abrasive cutting.

Mori Seiki Powering Porsche:

Last year Porsche stepped back into the LMP1 (Le Mans Prototype) division of FIA World Endurance Championship auto racing with premier partner DMG Mori Seiki, one of the world’s leaders in machining tools like CNC lathes and CNC milling machines. The FIA World Endurance Championship series includes a handful of endurance races of at least six hours each and the premier race, the 24 Hours of Le Mans in France. With the assistance of Mori Seiki and other partners, drivers in the Porsche 919 Hybrid finished first and second in the 24-hour race at Le Mans in June of this year. According to Mori Seiki, new efficiency rules for the racing series require advanced hybrid technologies, and the Japanese-based company has a wealth of experience in creating machines that operate at high performance and efficiency.
