Good article on backup rings. These are one of the most common seals we see installed incorrectly. Back up rings are ALWAYS installed opposite the pressure side.

Having performance issues with your plow unit? Then change that fluid! Hydraulic fluid neglect, whether being dirty fluid or the wrong fluid will cause any system to operate less efficiently and will damage expensive components. Once water enters the hydraulic system it has no way to escape. The hydraulic fluid will take on a cloudy/milky appearance when enough water has entered the system. With regards to snow plows, the system is now in danger of freezing up. Once this happens, there is a risk of severely damaging the hydraulic components. Changing the fluid regularly is cheap insurance and will allow you to get the most out of your unit.

Keeping your hydraulic fluid clean is essential when trying to maintain a healthy hydraulic system. Moisture buildup and debris will expedite the wear of expensive components in motors and pumps and overall lower the effectiveness of the system. This can lead to costly repairs and troubleshooting nightmares. A simple filtration system will help keep maintenance cost down, productivity up, and overall extend the life of your hydraulic components.

Below is a picture of the many headaches caused by debris. A dirty funnel was used when topping off the hydraulic reservoir. This piece of debris ended up fouling up a relief valve in a control block causing pressure loss throughout the system.
