Live at sound of music 2015!!!

In 2015, Sound of Music was just starting to have live shows. Our studio was in a former church space across from the VCU Kroger on Lombardy. In April of that year, a young woman named Lucy showed up to play a show before she left for her post high school trip to Europe. I was immediately impressed by her songs and her quirky audience interaction.

During this time, I was working at our sister studio in Holland often. I had sent an email to my friends out there, introducing them to Lucy and telling them to be there if she needed anything. That day I gave her my analog compass to take with her… sometimes when you are traveling a compass will keep you on course when your phone won’t. I think she kept on course, right?!? We are so proud of who she is and what she’s done as a Richmond born artist.❤️~JOHN MORAND

Since then, Lucy has gone on to make some incredible records including No Burden, Historian, and Home Video, songs that have connected with people globally, and of course becoming one third of boygenius alongside Julien Baker and Phoebe Bridgers. From our little Richmond show to Grammy wins and world tours, it’s been amazing watching her journey unfold while still carrying that same honesty and spirit she had in our little studio space back in 2015.

Hey guys! SOM wanted to share our final NPR Tiny Desk Contest submission that we recorded right here in the studio. Today, we’re highlighting “No Drama Mama”.

Blue Rooster Band RVA is a “free-range” local group that has been playing together for over a decade! Just like their Tiny Desk Submission, their performances are energetic, soulful, and funky. The tight-knit band composes a blend of old school country, psychedelic soul, and absolute funkiness into their songs.

Their NPR submission, “No Drama Mama,” led by guitarist and vocalist Steve Varvel, shows off the chemistry that takes years of playing together to master. From being played on WRIR 97.3 FM to regular shows at spots like Honey Whyte’s All American Grill and the Bon Air Community Center, they’ve stayed active in the Richmond scene.

Doesn’t matter how long it’s been, they’ve always got it! You can find them on ReverbNation.

Thank you to everyone who helped out during each shoot! Winners are announced later this month, we’re rooting for everyone who submitted and hoping for the best.

SOM Throwback Thursday!!!
Back in 2014 when we were on Broad Street across from the Kroger, we had built up so much gear that we decided to throw a yard sale and invite everyone to come buy and sell.

In this great video by , you’ll spot me (John) back when I still had some hair lol—and when our kids were young. Extra points if you can spot a future member of TV Battle Stations!

The video features a great soundtrack by , partly recorded in our Holland studio—more on that in future throwbacks.

We’re grateful for all the support Richmond has shown us over the years, and we always try to give back.
—John

Hey guys! SOM wanted to share another one of our NPR Tiny Desk Contest submissions that we recorded right here in the studio. Today, we’re highlighting .

Singer-songwriter Billy McMullen’s soulful voice blends country, blues, and southern rock to explore the complexities of his experiences and emotions. “Where Did You Go” dwells on Billy’s vulnerable feelings of love and loss, featuring an intense romantic reflection.

After time in the NFL, Billy brought that same drive and focus into music, building something that feels real and lived-in. His NPR submission, “Where Did You Go,” featuring and , is part of that, along with other recent work like “Maybe It’s Time,” both recorded here at Sound of Music.

It’s been exciting to watch his journey grow. From sessions in the studio to sold-out shows like his recent headline at , in partnership with .

It’s always great to record with artists and see their developing sound as they step into their own spotlight. Winners are announced next month and we’re rooting for everyone who submitted, hoping for the best.

SOM Throwback Thursday!!! Back in 2015, Sound of Music had just bought out the front studio of their Scott’s Addition location, with the back rooms still in the works. Around then, Imaginary Sons had already been building a buzz in the RVA music scene with their early recordings and creative videos.

In the clip, Tommy, Kyle, and Russell of Imaginary Sons show their innovative, free-spirit while recording their song “Taste the Waste” for their 2016 album “Don’t Impress Me.” Their album combined tight songwriting with the ongoing Richmond punk/indie-rock energy. The three of them were a perfect trio, using amazing band chemistry to create great harmonies during the recordings.

Along with Toxic Moxie and the Smirks, their shows were perfect for awesome moshing events during the 2010’s.

“I remember that at the CD release for “Don’t Impress me” at The Camel, I lost one of my shoes in the pit… good times!!!” - John

Hey guys! SOM wanted to share our NPR Tiny Desk contestants that we recorded here at the studio. Our contestant that we want to give light to today is . Below is his story that we wanted to share with you.

“I’m Brandon Scott Jones, a Virginia-based country artist, volunteer firefighter of over 20 years, and a father who put my music dreams on hold to raise my autistic son. Once he was taken care of, I felt called to step back into music—not just to chase a dream, but to share something real.

Music has always been how I process life—faith, struggle, redemption, and the stories that shape us. “In the Wind” is a reflection of that… learning to let go, trust God’s timing, and understand that sometimes we’re not meant to control the direction—just follow it.

This Tiny Desk-style performance is special to me because it’s raw and honest. The fire helmet on the desk is mine—it represents where I’ve been, and the music represents where I’m going”

It’s so exciting to see and hear about the growth of a musician’s journey from the start of production to them finding their own spotlight. Winners are announced next month and we’re crossing our fingers for everyone who submitted, hoping for the best!
