Exciting things are happening at SOM:

Partners Wallace Dietz and Daniel Dano Deckelman collaborated on a new project, The Melody Chamber and their post modern New Wave debut album was released by Happy Happy Birthday to Me Records (HHBTM) and Too Good To Be True on CD and vinyl last November to critical acclaim.

John Morand (drums), Daniel Dano Deckelman (synth), and Wallace (vocals, guitar) recently recorded 10 new tracks for their jangle-pop/post punk group, The Silent Boys, and lo and behold the album will release on Shelflife Records and Too Good To Be True (vinyl and CD) on Nov 6.

This isn’t a coincidence- lightning doesn’t strike twice. Some quality engineering and production work is happening here. So get your new songs together, polish them up, and schedule a pre-production consultation with us. Let’s keep this momentum rocking and rolling.

A lil SOM Flashback Friday for yall!

We’ve really been enjoying sharing some of our favorite moments from these past 30 years. We’ve been hauling our butts recently and keeping the momentum going to do our part to help any RVA musicians or recordings.

Sons of Bill – The Making of ‘Sirens’ .

A little flashback to our days on Foushee Street. “Charlottesville’s Sons of Bill came through to make Sirens, a great Americana record mixed by Jim Scott (Tom Petty, The Rolling Stones, Whiskeytown). Watching this footage brings back a lot of great memories. It’s good to see Nick’s Produce still standing. I still miss that bean soup!!!” ~JOHN MORAND

Live at sound of music 2015!!!

In 2015, Sound of Music was just starting to have live shows. Our studio was in a former church space across from the VCU Kroger on Lombardy. In April of that year, a young woman named Lucy showed up to play a show before she left for her post high school trip to Europe. I was immediately impressed by her songs and her quirky audience interaction.

During this time, I was working at our sister studio in Holland often. I had sent an email to my friends out there, introducing them to Lucy and telling them to be there if she needed anything. That day I gave her my analog compass to take with her… sometimes when you are traveling a compass will keep you on course when your phone won’t. I think she kept on course, right?!? We are so proud of who she is and what she’s done as a Richmond born artist.❤️~JOHN MORAND

Since then, Lucy has gone on to make some incredible records including No Burden, Historian, and Home Video, songs that have connected with people globally, and of course becoming one third of boygenius alongside Julien Baker and Phoebe Bridgers. From our little Richmond show to Grammy wins and world tours, it’s been amazing watching her journey unfold while still carrying that same honesty and spirit she had in our little studio space back in 2015.
