Join us on Tuesday, August 8, at 1:00pm for a tour of the new Yard 56 development in Baltimore! This hard hat tour, hosted by CREW Network Baltimore, will include a look at Phase IIB, a mixed-use development including 227 apartments, a 647-car garage, and 5,700 square feet of retail space. Century-Kleinfelder provided structural engineering services for the development, including helping to ensure that shell building designs would meet the needs of potential tenants. Century-Kleinfelder’s Kent Hoffman, Facilities Engineering Manager, will be a speaker at the event. We hope to see you there!

Century-Kleinfelder’s Scott Rathfon, Bill Conway, and Brian Kisner had an incredible experience at the recent Delaware Department of Transportation (DelDOT) DBE Networking Event, hosted at the iconic Dover Motor Speedway. The event served as a fantastic platform to foster connections between key individuals from DelDOT, prominent engineering companies, and prime contractors with prospective DBE business partners, all within a relaxed and enjoyable setting. Set at the famous "Monster Mile," Dover Speedway, known for its thrilling races, offered participants a unique opportunity to ride in a pace car, hurtling around the track at exhilarating speeds of up to 90 mph.

The networking event not only facilitated meaningful business connections, but also provided an adrenaline-pumping adventure for attendees, creating unforgettable memories and connections. Century is proud to be a sponsor of DelDOT’s DBE Networking Events series.

Join us August 2 and 3 for this year’s TUgis Conference! For more than 30 years, the TUgis Conference has provided the regional GIS community with engaging sessions, hands-on training, and networking opportunities. This year’s keynote presentation will feature Dr. Roni Ellington from Morgan State University with the presentation “Space Invaders: Reimagining the Role of Space in Realizing our Vision of Diversity, Inclusion, and Equity in STEM Education.” Century is proud to be a bronze sponsor of this year’s event.

Century’s Sean Lavallee, GISP, will present during the transportation special interests group meeting on Wednesday. His presentation will focus on recent ADA improvements and construction management in the Anne Arundel County area. Century’s Shawn Pickett, Jr. will provide an introduction to the presentations and panel discussion.

Century-Kleinfelder recently attended the groundbreaking ceremony for the I-95 and SR 896 Interchange project in Newark, Delaware. The interchange has seen more than 700 accidents over a three-year period (2019-2021). Improvements were designed to address safety and congestion for all motorists, including the many people who use these roads because of their close proximity to the University of Delaware. Construction is set to begin on May 8, and the project is expected to be completed by the fall of 2025.

In attendance at the groundbreaking ceremony were Andy Waslyn, Bill Conway, Kate Ford, Steve Penoza, Kyle Castillo, Paul Leary, and Pat Horsky from the Century-Kleinfelder team, along with Delaware Governor John Carney, U.S. Senator Tom Carper, U.S. Representative Lisa Blunt Rochester, DelDOT Secretary Nicole Majeski, and representatives from the Delaware Department of Transportation (DelDOT), Federal Highway Administration, and project contractor Wagman.

Century-Kleinfelder will hold a public meeting in conjunction with the Salisbury/Wicomico Metropolitan Planning Organization (SWMPO), Delaware Department of Transportation (DelDOT), and local Bicycle Advisory Committee members on Thursday, March 16, at 6:00 pm. This virtual meeting is being held to discuss the Southwest Sussex County Bicycle Master Plan, and all interested community members are encouraged to attend. The Bicycle Master Plan will provide a framework and recommendations to enhance the existing bike routes in the study, connect bike routes where warranted, and provide locally elected officials and DelDOT with information to make informed policy and capital programming considerations. This is the first in a series of public meetings as the plan is further developed. We hope to see you there!

Century-Kleinfelder’s Sonia Marichic-Goudy, PE, Program Manager in our Newark, Delaware, office recently had the opportunity to take part in a roundtable discussion about engineering at Padua Academy in Wilmington during Engineers Week! The panel, made up of school alumnae, discussed civil engineering, biomedical engineering, chemical engineering, and mechanical engineering with an audience of 66 students. Among other activities, the students also competed in a tower-building activity, a scavenger hunt, and an engineering quiz. Thank you, Sonia, for helping to encourage the next generation of engineers!

Sonia commented, “It’s always great to be able to encourage the next generation of engineers. This event was extra special to have all girls in the audience. I look forward to the amazing things they will accomplish!”

Our Maryland teams recently celebrated the groundbreaking of the Crownsville (Herald Harbor) Fire Station in Crownsville, Maryland as part of the Anne Arundel County Fire Department! The 22,400-square-foot facility will feature four drive-through bays, sleeping quarters, a kitchen, community room, and other support spaces. Century-Kleinfelder worked collaboratively with the project architect, Manns Woodward Studios - Architects, to evaluate three alternative schemes. Site work included layout, stormwater management, sediment and erosion controls, natural resources inventory and forest conservation planning, landscaping, roadway frontage improvements, and roadway/traffic signal improvements. The new station will expand service coverage to an additional 4,000 occupancies. Century-Kleinfelder will complete third-party building commissioning services and construction phase services. This project has been designed with LEED Silver standards in mind so that it may be submitted for certification once complete.

Pete Mellits, PE, LEED AP, project manager, commented, “The new Herald Harbor Fire Station will bring efficiency, comfort, and updated amenities to the first responders and community in Anne Arundel County. Through careful consideration of alternatives, this multifaceted fire station will serve the community for years to come.”
