in 1926, Carl Monismith was born in Pennsylvania. From the time he set foot on campus at UC Berkeley in 1946 until he retired in 2016, a remarkable 70 years had passed. Carl was an absolute giant in pavement engineering. He was the recipient of the 1978 American Society of Civil Engineers State of the Art Award, and in 2012, delivered the first Monismith Lecture on Pavement Engineering, which has been awarded every year since. He passed away in 2025 and is missed every day.
