Q. What inspired you to pursue a career in architecture?
My interest in architecture comes from growing up between two cultures. Being Colombian showed me how design reflects different ways of life.
I saw that buildings in Colombia and the U.S. respond differently to climate, resources, and people’s needs. This made me realize architecture is about more than buildings—it’s about people and culture, which inspired me to pursue it.
Q. Can you describe a moment, experience, or person that sparked your interest in design?
My grandfather sparked my interest in design. As a history professor, he taught me to look beyond appearances and understand deeper meaning. He showed me how even simple homes in Colombia tell stories about the people who live in them. Because of him, I see architecture not just as something beautiful, but as something meaningful that connects people to their environment and identity
Q. What excites you most about the type of projects you work on?
What excites me most is solving problems that impact people’s everyday lives. Whether starting from scratch or renovating, I enjoy creating spaces that are more functional, comfortable, and meaningful—focused on how they’re truly experienced.
Q. What advice would you give to students interested in architecture?
My advice to students is to stay curious and enjoy the process. Architecture is always evolving, and the challenges that come with it are where growth happens. Ask questions—even simple ones—as they can lead to new ideas and perspectives. Most importantly, remember that architecture is collaborative. There’s always something to learn and something to contribute.
If you stay open, passionate, and willing to grow, architecture will give that back to you.
Thank you, Juan, we appreciate everything that you do!!
