We love seeing our team inspire curiosity in the next generation!

Kelli Hajek from our Columbia, SC Cultural Resources group recently partnered with Live Oak Library in Savannah, GA to present “Digging for Information: Discover Archaeology” as part of their summer reading program.

Participants explored real artifacts, learned what archaeologists do in the field, and even conducted their own mini “excavations” using chocolate chip cookies. The experience sparked plenty of excitement, with one child already planning to start digging in their backyard to become a future archaeologist!

In recognition of National Safety Month hosted by National Safety Council, we’re highlighting one of the many ways S&ME supports safe work from day one: prescription safety glasses at no cost to employees.

We equip our teams with essential personal protective equipment (PPE) so they have what they need to work safely in the field, including:

• Hard hat
• Safety vest
• Hearing and hand protection
• Safety glasses
• Steel toe boot allowance

Can you guess these zoomed-in PPE photos? In celebration of National Safety Month hosted by National Safety Council, we’re spotlighting the gear that helps our teams stay protected in the field every day.

At S&ME, PPE is a key part of our safety culture as the last line of defense. We have 140+ Job Hazard Analyses that help outline the appropriate personal protective equipment for technicians based on the work being performed.

From hard hats and safety vests to gloves, hearing protection, and safety glasses, every piece of PPE plays an important role in helping reduce risk and support safer job sites.

Using your fleet vehicle as a protective barrier.

In recognition of National Safety Month hosted by National Safety Council, we’re spotlighting a few key Worker on Foot/Struck-By safety practices:
- Park your vehicle facing the flow of traffic
- Turn on your flashing cab light
- Work within 10 feet of the back of your vehicle
- Wear high visibility clothing

This training is an essential first step for S&ME personnel before entering the field. Learn more about our safety training and protocols: https://www.smeinc.com/safety/

Low and slow, sweet heat, and everything in between. BBQ is an art, and our Chattanooga team brought the flavor.

Johan Perez, Jacob Ballew, Chuck Williams, and Damon Parker competed in the Associated General Contractors of East Tennessee Chapter Big Pig BBQ Festival, supporting the Construction Career Center, a local vocational school for high school and adult students.

Our Connect Young Professionals group in Raleigh had a great time getting together at Crooked Hammock Brewery on Friday.

An ideal spot to hang out outside the office, and even better knowing S&ME played a part in bringing this destination that blends craft brewing, dining, and outdoor recreation to Raleigh!

S&ME’s Ripshin Lake Dam Repairs Project has earned a National Recognition Award from ACEC National, building on its earlier ACEC Tennessee Engineering Excellence Grand Award.

Located in Roan Mountain, Tennessee, the 43-foot-tall, high-hazard dam required comprehensive rehabilitation to address aging infrastructure and improve long-term safety and reliability.

Led by Project Manager Jason Reeves, the S&ME team partnered closely with Ripshin Lake Corporation to replace aging systems, strengthen the embankment, and improve internal drainage while modernizing the structure to help safeguard downstream homes, infrastructure, and the surrounding community.

Team members, including Jason Reeves and John Weavil, joined our client representative, John Seward of Ripshin Lake Corporation, at the ACEC Engineering Excellence Awards Gala in Washington, DC to celebrate this recognition and the collaborative effort behind the project.
