S&ME’s Ripshin Lake Dam Repairs Project has earned a National Recognition Award from ACEC National, building on its earlier ACEC Tennessee Engineering Excellence Grand Award.

Located in Roan Mountain, Tennessee, the 43-foot-tall, high-hazard dam required comprehensive rehabilitation to address aging infrastructure and improve long-term safety and reliability.

Led by Project Manager Jason Reeves, the S&ME team partnered closely with Ripshin Lake Corporation to replace aging systems, strengthen the embankment, and improve internal drainage while modernizing the structure to help safeguard downstream homes, infrastructure, and the surrounding community.

Team members, including Jason Reeves and John Weavil, joined our client representative, John Seward of Ripshin Lake Corporation, at the ACEC Engineering Excellence Awards Gala in Washington, DC to celebrate this recognition and the collaborative effort behind the project.

Situational awareness is everyone’s responsibility on the job site. Construction Safety Week challenge: Do you know where the blind spots are?

Most mobile-equipment incidents happen because of:
- Limited visibility or obstructed sight lines
- Equipment defects or malfunctioning safety features
- Unauthorized or untrained operators

Construction Safety Week is about planning with purpose, leading with action, and reinforcing that every incident is preventable. One of the most serious (and often underestimated) risks on active jobsites is mobile equipment and blind spots. Operators, technicians, and engineers all play a role in recognizing hazards, communicating clearly, and keeping a safe distance.

Earth Day is a reminder that environmental stewardship is powered by people and by the expertise they invest in. As S&ME’s Rebeckah Sims reflects, “I love how Earth Day not only reminds us that we have to be good stewards of the earth, but it also is just a great time to educate people.”

With nine years in environmental consulting, Rebeckah supports natural resources projects from threatened species surveys to Hurricane Helene restoration efforts.

In our latest ‘Breaking Down the AEC Acronym’ blog, she shares her experience recently earning an Ecologist Certification and why credentials like this strengthen the decisions clients rely on to keep projects moving while protecting critical resources.

This past Saturday, our Raleigh Construction Services team went ‘Under the Hard Hat’ for a full day of learning, collaboration, and connection, building on a year that included 66,604 direct hours worked, 651,160 miles driven, and 12,826 concrete cylinders made (an average of 35 cylinders per day)!

This year’s event had a strong technical focus, with Project Manager–led breakout sessions that allowed our field staff to dig deeper into the work they do every day. After a motivational kickoff, participants attended three chosen breakout sessions, with six total sessions offered throughout the day.

To wrap up the day, the team kept the momentum going at Buffalo Lanes for some friendly competition and team bonding.

As a 100% employee-owned firm, we’ve seen firsthand how ownership strengthens culture and accountability.

We were proud to host the City of Raleigh - Government’s press conference announcing Employee Ownership Raleigh at our headquarters office. Led by The Democracy At Work Institute and delivered locally through the City of Raleigh and the North Carolina Employee Ownership Center, Employee Ownership Raleigh is an initiative that helps local business owners explore succession planning and employee ownership as a long-term strategy for continuity, local jobs, and community wealth.

We’re grateful to our partners, including Raleigh Mayor, Janet Cowell, for joining us to officially launch this important initiative.

S&ME’s Noah Watts and Jimmy Muench shared ‘How to Turn Inspiration Into Action’ at 321 Coffee Day Conference in Raleigh.

As S&ME continues to grow, so does the need to expand our team. As Field Supervisor, Jimmy has hired several Associate Construction Engineering Technicians, including Noah, to support that momentum.

In 2025, just 22.8% of people with a disability were employed, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Noah is part of that powerful community, bringing experience from 321 Coffee, WakeMed, Monteith Construction, and now S&ME.

Today, he assists on job sites with fieldwork. One of his favorite job duties is stripping cylinders, involving removing molds from cured concrete samples. “We make sure the cylinder molds are safe to go on site,” Noah explains.

Training a technician at S&ME typically takes 2 - 3 years. “We are only 9 months in, and Noah is exceeding expectations,” Jimmy shared.

One major takeaway from the conference: inclusion strengthens both the business and the individual. We’re proud to champion a workplace where everyone can thrive.
