EP/Apex is currently assisting several municipalities with Catchment Investigations of their drainage systems as part of their Illicit Discharge Detection and Elimination (IDDE) Programs. This work involves updating asset information and the municipality’s drainage mapping, plus screening the stormwater flow when illicit connections are suspected.

As part of the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) Phase II Stormwater Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System (MS4) Permit; Massachusetts communities will need to complete these inspections of their MS4 catchment areas by 2028.

We enjoy working side by side with our clients to improve and manage their stormwater systems and to identify and remove any illicit connections along the way!

EP/Apex Co-Ops were able to get an up-close look at one of our exciting projects last week!

The decades-long planning and design of a new state-of-the-art water treatment plant for the Tri-Town Water District (Braintree, Holbrook, and Randolph, MA) started construction in December 2022. The plant will treat surface water supply including PFAS6 removal, and is designed to have capacity for 12.5MGD (million gallons per day) providing clean water to almost 80,000 residents between the three communities.

EP is excited to be working with the Town of Hanover, Massachusetts on a comprehensive water tank rehabilitation project that supports the long-term reliability of the Town’s water system. Maintaining critical infrastructure like water storage tanks is essential for extending asset life and safeguarding public health.

Proactively planning capital improvements projects like this one helps reduce the risk of costly emergency repairs and keeps communities on track to continue to receive safe, reliable water service for years to come.

EP is working with the Town of Bridgewater, MA on a multi-phase upgrade to their Morris Ave. Wastewater Treatment Facility. The first phase is to enhance the Rotating Biological Contactor process to reduce effluent levels of nitrogen (Permit limits for total nitrogen of 60 lbs/day and ammonia nitrogen of 3 mg/L and 36 lbs/day) to the receiving waters that are tributary to the impaired waters of the Taunton River Watershed.

Construction is anticipated to be completed early 2025 in time for the new Spring Nitrogen Permit limits to be reached.

EP continues to work with the City of Framingham, MA, to improve its wastewater pumping infrastructure. With over 40 wastewater pumping stations, the City must develop cost-effective solutions to maintain these facilities, ensuring they continue to operate effectively and reliably.

EP assisted the City in rehabilitating the Garvey Road Pumping Station by reusing the existing below-grade structure. The improvements include replacing the interior process mechanical, ventilation, and electrical equipment. A corrosion-resistant coating system will be applied to all exposed surfaces, and new cathodic anodes will be installed to protect the structure.

The project is substantially complete, with remaining site work and restoration expected to be finished this fall.

The City of Medford, MA, USA in partnership with EP, is upgrading its water meters and Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) system to ensure continued accuracy, efficiency, and proactive leak detection.

Through a qualifications-based procurement process, the City of Medford contracted with F.W. Webb and selected Kamstrup Water Metering’s ultrasonic meters for their advanced features and reliability. A highlight of the new Kamstrup meters is the built-in acoustic leak detection (ALD) technology. This innovative system "listens" to the water distribution network, identifying leaks before they can cause any disruptions for residents. By detecting issues early, this technology enhances water management and increases the overall efficiency of Medford's water system.

The upgraded AMI system, which reads the new meters, includes several strategically placed collectors throughout the City, ensuring reliable data transmission. This system works seamlessly with Medford’s WaterSmart program, allowing residents to monitor their water usage online and receive real-time alerts for high usage or potential leaks. With hourly data, WaterSmart is even more effective at detecting and resolving leaks within homes, supporting water conservation, and helping residents manage their usage.

Meter replacements, performed by Mass Installation Inc. of Norwood, MA, are ongoing and will continue through 2024.
