I always wanted to be a welder. When I was twelve years old my grandpa moved onto our ranch in Santé Ynez, CA. He was a welder and my best friend. I couldn’t wait to get home from school to work with him. He taught me the basics and I loved everything about it.
In 1976 I was a freshman in high school and took an AGG mechanics class. Our first project was making a Santa Maria grill with a 55-gallon barrel. We made a frame and the barrel bolted on, so it could be replaced. A cool idea for a low budget project.
At 18 I was a certified structural welder. I worked from Santa Barbara to Paso Robles in oilfield construction, pipeline, heavy equipment repair, pipe fence, built barns/cattle facilities….
I dabbled in everything. In my spare time I was always fabricating Santa Maria style grills for family & friends. I love making grills-it never gets old. I love the creative process and the feedback I get about how much they enjoyed cooking on something I made for them.
We moved to Missouri in 2016 and I went to work as Quality Control Inspector at a fab shop. My job is to check all steps of fabrication for other welder’s work. I’ve learned a lot but I miss the hands on of welding. So, every day I can’t wait to get home and work in my shop building Santa Maria Grills. I was amazed at how many people here have never heard of that style of grill.
I put a grill I’d made up for sale on Facebook marketplace, met the guys from BBQ Brands and here we are. It’s been a fun collaboration process. Their knowledge and love of grilling mixed with my skills…we’ve come up with a grill design that I’m very proud of.
