This week, on 26 May, 53 teammates returned to the place where, for many, their ESCO story began: the site of our original foundry in Xuzhou, China.

Led by Site Manager, Guangkuo Zhao, together they walked the campus, built in 2006 to serve the mining market, before lowering the company flag and closing the gate for the last time.

After 18 remarkable years at the site, 2024 marked the beginning of a new chapter with the opening of a new foundry a few kilometers away, where the team is thriving.

For those at Weir who have relocated and seen buildings come and go, one question remains: If the building walls could talk, what stories would they tell?

Reflected Guangkuo on their walk down memory lane, “We kept committed and worked together … but what’s more important is we made tremendous achievements together: we performed at the highest levels, served customers, embedded Weir’s culture of safety first, sustained our continuous improvement efforts and showed respect for our people.”

What does the original cohort still remember about those early days at the original site? Meet the Xuzhou class of 2006: https://bit.ly/3Q6xyzy.

It was a thrill to support the 2026 Baja SAE Oregon competition at Washougal MX Park. From 7-10 May, we joined c.70 university students from the United States, Canada and Mexico to watch their ingenuity unfold as they tested, designed, built and race their own off-road vehicles across four jam-packed days!

We are proud to champion STEAM programs like this alongside our many Baja alumni to inspire the next generation of brilliant engineers. Thank you to the dozen employees who volunteered their time and talents to this year’s competition!

Meet Steve Carrigan.

Growing up, Steve Carrigan says being a horrible speller could interfere with his confidence. But, as the expression goes, when one door closes another one opens. In Steve’s case, what he may have lacked in spelling skill, he more than made up for in problem-solving prowess, which has taken him far.

“I like the challenge of what the next project is, the next hurdles I have to overcome to be successful,” shares Steve, a manufacturing team leader at Weir’s Covington, Kentucky, operation.

Perhaps one of the biggest manufacturing challenges he’s mastered is the site’s recent acquisition of a new, top-tier CNC machining center. The new equipment is helping reduce lead times for customers who rely on the site for exceptionally durable machined parts, particularly heavy duty ESCO® chain systems for the fiber processing industry (think paper mills). Among Steve’s many contributions to helping select and operationalize the new machining center was taking the initiative to write programs and building fixturing for the equipment.

Steve joined the ESCO Division of Weir as a welder in 1994. Over the last 32 years, he’s had the opportunity to gain experience through many roles, including inspector, forming brake press operator and roll form programming, among others. He also served as the site’s night shift team leader for 12 years. Colleagues describe Steve as an incredibly talented machinist with an astonishing ability to tell you exactly what tolerances can be achieved within half a thousandth of an inch for certain machining processes.

But when he’s not shining as a leader and machinist, Steve’s passion is travel. He enjoys hiking and checking out tourist caves. He particularly loves waterfalls and has traveled around the world to find new favorites to add to his list. The prettiest he’s seen so far, says Steve, is in a New Zealand rainforest.

When possible, Steve enjoys traveling with his son who works in Antarctica at McMurdo Station, the largest research and logistics installation operated by the U.S.’ National Science Foundation. His son is a problem-solver, too, helping ensure generators, solar panels, snowmobiles and other essential equipment are set up and functional for the station’s scientists and other team members.

Last fall, we were honored to share our involvement in a meaningful community cause alongside Link-Belt Excavators, our valued long-time customer.

At the center of the joint effort was a bright pink Link-Belt 145 X4 excavator, named Pink-Belt, which was outfitted with a custom ESCO® excavator bucket.

Following a U.S.-wide roadshow, the Pink-Belt machine was auctioned in March at CONExpo 2026 in Las Vegas, Nevada. The excavator sold for $220,000, with proceeds benefiting two of Link-Belt’s longstanding partners: the National Breast Cancer Foundation and Yes, Mamm! by CHI Saint Joseph Health Foundations.

It was an honor to contribute to this special build, supporting a project dedicated to raising awareness and funds in the fight against breast cancer! LBX Company, Maker of Link-Belt Excavators

Meet Jecob Angway.

In 2018, Jecob Angway was an early career engineer just a few years out of university with a mechanical engineering degree in his pocket. He was working as a mechanical design engineer, creating passenger cabin interiors for large aircraft makers, including Boeing and Airbus. He was honing his craft, mastering sophisticated design and simulation software, and performing advanced 3D modelling of mechanical components, assembly, tooling and more for products that would be integrated into passenger aircraft.

One day, Jecob was casually browsing job opportunities online when he came across a posting for a design engineer opening at Weir in Manila, about 63 kilometers north of his job at the time.

“I decided to give it a try based on the skills I had then and, fortunately, I was able to land the job,” remembers Jecob. His timing was fortuitous as the company’s ESCO Division happened to be expanding its engineering team in Manila to support its established Portland team and provide 24/7 full-service engineering expertise for customers.

Today, nearly eight years later, Jecob is a senior design engineer on the Manila casting team where he designs ESCO® ground engaging tools for the construction and mining industries. Colleagues say he consistently demonstrates a strong commitment to growth and professional development, as well as a genuine passion for contributing to the organization’s success.

“Working at Weir has really been great,” Jecob says. “I like the positive and collaborative environment here. Colleagues connect well with one another, and the company reinforces it through teambuilding programs with healthy competitive spirit. The focus on performance and continuous improvement, combined with work‑life balance initiatives and a strong commitment to safety, make it a fulfilling place to work.”

In his free time, Jecob is an outdoor adventurer, enjoying mountain hikes, setting up camps, and unwinding in nature. He’s participated in organized multiday hikes as well as DIY hikes. Some of these activities have been serious business. Jecob has explored and climbed several mountains in the Philippines, including the country’s highest, Mount Apo. Last year, he hiked to the South Everest Base Camp, completing an approximately 120‑kilometer trek up Mount Everest in Nepal. He describes it as “a surreal and unforgettable experience.”

“Personally, I find hiking is somewhat a form of therapy,” Jecob shares, “giving me more time to connect with nature and focus on myself.”

When a former coworker mentioned that Weir’s site in Nisku, Alberta, Canada, was thinking differently about how they could hire more women in the trades, Norie Consultado was intrigued. She was ready for a new challenge after spending most of her career in the food service industry, where she worked her way up to supervisor roles.

Three years later, Norie is now a robot operator in Nisku, her first industrial job and a world apart from her previous consumer-facing, food service roles.

“At first, I was a little hesitant, not knowing if I wanted to get out of my comfort zone,” she says. But she soon realized the role was a good-paying job with good benefits and offered opportunities to learn valuable new skills and advance professionally.

For her new role, Norie learned to operate a robotic arm to perform overlay welding, the process of welding hard-facing overlay material onto products used in extreme environments, such as highly abrasive oil sands mining. Weir’s Nisku site plays a critical role in fabricating products for Canadian oil sands customers.

Norie says she finds the job peaceful and low stress, more so than dealing with the public on a daily basis. Plus, she likes that it allows her to work independently and provides greater work-life balance.

When she’s not working, Norie focuses on spending quality time with family — her household includes her husband, three children ranging from 12- to 21-years-old, her father and her in-laws. It’s a full house, but Norie says she likes to keep everything organized.

“Whenever I'm home, I’m always happy doing my household chores,” she says. In her spare time, Norie also enjoys DIY projects. And these projects are impressive. She has enlisted the help of her father, who is a carpenter, and other family members to build a new deck and garage and install fencing on their property. They also finished their home’s basement, providing additional living space for the family.

And, because she regularly works mornings at Weir, there’s more opportunity for family time. “Because we all are able to be home at the same time, we have our nights all together,” she adds, smiling.

This week’s headlines reflected the meaningful progress we are making against our strategic ambitions, as well as an important milestone in Weir’s leadership journey.

1. Our first quarter results were in line with expectations and order growth remained on-track. ESCO highlights included the successful acquisition of the Santiago, Chile, foundry and continued momentum strengthening our go-direct presence.

2. Weir also announced that, after 10 years as Chief Executive Officer, Jon Stanton will step down on 1 August. He will be succeeded by Andrew Neilson, currently President of the Minerals Division. Andrew previously served as ESCO Division President from 2020–2022 and as Chief Integration Officer during the ESCO acquisition from 2018–2019. We extend our sincere thanks to Jon for his leadership and impact, and congratulate Andrew as he prepares to step into his new role.

You never know where life may lead you. “Sometimes you have to make changes for you and your family,” says Shaun Lanham, manufacturing supervisor for the mold and core departments at Weir’s Portland Plant 3 foundry.

Shaun has lived those words. Three years ago, he took the bold step of leaving behind a familiar longtime job in a fast-paced, Japanese frozen food business for something different — a challenging new role in a completely unfamiliar industry. He did it to shake up his routine, achieve greater work-life balance and pursue new career opportunities.

At his previous job, Shaun was introduced to 5S and learned how to work in a multicultural environment, picking up different languages along the way. He now is putting that knowledge and experience into his role at Plant 3 and building on it. “It’s a different type of work,” acknowledges Shaun, “but it’s still about building relationships with people, earning trust and doing what you say you will.”

Currently, Shaun is participating in a rotational training program at the plant and is immersed in continuous improvement disciplines. He says it’s given him a broader, more objective perspective. “I’m looking at the whole plant now and what I can do to help it continue to grow and improve,” he explains.

Shaun likes to get involved, too. He recently volunteered to lead a group of high school students through the foundry, explaining the work being done there and the importance of safety. In addition, he has been known to join in planning and serving employee appreciation lunches to reward a job well done.

“I want to be the best leader I can be, lead by example and advance my career,” Shaun shares.

When he’s not working, Shaun is all about family and fun. He, his wife and family, including two adult children and a 4-year-old grandson, enjoy spending time together, including the occasional vacation to Hawaii. Shaun recently officiated the marriage of his son and daughter-in-law.

If you don’t run into Shaun on a beach somewhere you might find him at a ballpark or go-kart track. He likes to stay active and says he typically finds himself in a softball league during summer.
