A little rough coming in. Not so going out.

1980 Shovelhead rebuild/reman/blueprint. Better than new and ready for another few decades of reliable service! Returned with a copy of the blueprint assembly spec sheet.

What evil lurks behind the mask of carbon?

In this case some mighty decrepit looking valve seats for this front 1980 Shovelhead casting! Sent in for a rebuild/reman, the rear head was fine; in fact, the seat depths were within .010" of new fitment specs, but this front one looked like somebody put a garden hose in an open spark plug hole before they put it in storage for a few years!

The OEM Shovelhead counterbores were dimensionally in great shape so spin up a couple of new "drop-ins" to original late HD spec's for the late model Shovelheads, Heat'em, Freeze'em, Sink'em then Rap'em down after some chill time. Definitely NOT my first rodeo here, only done it like a few thousands, if not a few 10's of thousands of times over the last 46 years, so save the advisory comments boys and girls!

I've got no other social media account other than FB and I normally don't spend THAT much time actively connected to it. Most of the time I do spend messaging and posting on FB is from a desk top computer in my workshop office space. My phone is pretty much just a business phone, and it stays on my desk in my workshop when it is not being used to directly communicate with someone. I certainly don't go cross-eyed, gazing intensely at that tiny screen for endless hours as I've watched some people do, because too much of that I think can turn your brain into mashed potatoes, destroying your ability to mentally focus and essentially transforming you into a Zuckerberg Zombie!

But today I did spend about a half hour scrolling through my "feed" (sounds like a term reserved for junkies, don't it?) and while being bombarded with post after post of some of the most meaningless content I've ever seen, there were no less than FOUR different cam manufacturers or "cam designers" or whatever you want to call them, claiming to have developed the most powerful cams in the world, or something akin to that, for your Harley-Davidson!

You know what that means don't you? At least THREE of them are lying!!!! 😂🤣

And with that said I'll end this jestful mini-rant and my small addition to all of the other worthless content on the Zuckerberg multi-ring circus!

Basics.

In the initial stages of modification many cylinder head assemblies can benefit engine performance substantially by raising the coefficient of discharge through judicious use of valve shape, valve size and seat geometry and other very intricate details primarily in the immediate valve seat areas. There is not always the need to aspire to the grind'em up, hog'em out big peak number mentality!

Add in material selections, internal components, machining and assembly practices that strongly favor long term durability from a craftsman who has been in business long enough to have SEEN
his work provide decades of real-world service and there you have it. My ProPrep2 cylinder head port and blueprint package to some late Twin Cam SE110 castings.

One small piece of the puzzle (but no less important).

When working on the early spur gear type pumps, does anybody else measure this out and then tweak the gear protrusion to get it within a specific range? If so, where do you like to see it? It's one of those unpublished dimensions that I forget where I picked it up but adhere to it on every early engine build that goes through here.
