I encountered my first “Roughed Grouse” on Needmore Rd. in the in and it was an awesome experience. I first noticed it while driving and initially thought it was some type of small bread chicken that had gotten loose and wondered away from it’s home until I approached closer on foot in order to check it out. This was a very cool experience to see something so naturally beautiful and to seemingly be as intrigued with it as it was of me.

Thankfully we had a good number of butterflies this spring to help us pollinate all the peach trees, and no major frosts to kill the fruit. Now we wait to see what the birds and squirrels leave us to harvest! 😆

The Nantahala Gorge in western North Carolina is an outstanding place to spend time wondering around. If you are ever in the Bryson City or Franklin areas, I can not suggest it enough. If you need to just relax in nature for a day or two but do not have days of free time to hike, this is the spot for you. (Although there is plenty of hiking opportunities too!)

The bottom of Cullasaja Falls is a mind-blowingly beautiful place. Even if a bit difficult and dangerous to get to.

Garnets, not gold. I have been doing some gold panning recently in my local area of western North Carolina in an attempt to find a few flakes of gold here in my town just so that I can say that I did it. And well, Franklin’s moniker as “the gem capital of the world” is really living up to it’s reputaion! Every time I have gone out I have found garnets at least, but not gold. It’s pretty incredible experience when you stumble across a section of river that is littered with so many garnets that the riverbed is literally a hue of red-ish purple, but I have seen it multiple times now and it doesn’t get old.
