CASTROL CLASSIC — FOR ENGINES THAT STILL LISTEN TO VINYL

Your car isn’t “old.” It’s analog.

It sounds like a first‑pressing Zeppelin album—warm, mechanical, imperfect in all the right ways. And because Fool In The Rain wasn’t meant to be listened to on a laptop speaker, we make Castrol Classic—oil for engines that were designed before auto-tune.

🔧 Classic Engine Oils
• Zinc/ZDDP levels properly tuned for flat‑tappet valvetrains
• Viscosity that holds steady, even when the heat hits Freddie at Wembly levels.
• Adhesion properties to support classic oil pumps and engines that are not run daily
• Low detergent and additives that won’t grate on your gaskets

⚙️ Classic Gear Oils
• Compatible with brass and bronze; (sorry a Charlie Parker metaphor was too easy – we just can’t…)
• Yes they are GL-3 & GL-4 – the tube amps of Gear Oil.

Whether your car swings with Sinatra or soars with Seger…Castrol Classic protects older engines and transmission and helps keep the music alive.

CASTROL CLASSIC — IF YOUR ENGINE IS COVERED BY A BIG MOLDED PIECE OF PLASTIC - THIS OIL IS NOT FOR YOU.

Your car haunts your garage. It smells like fuel, rubber and unresolved grudges from 1965. And when you pour modern oil into it? It looks back at you like you just fed a wolf a vegan cupcake.

That’s why Kanter now carries Castrol Classic—oil blended for machines built before digital screens with voices that make passive aggressive suggestions.

These aren’t modern synthetics re-labeled as “classic.” They’re true period‑correct lubricants engineered to match the metallurgy, bearings, clearances, and operating temperatures of cars built from the 1930s through the 1980s.

Why Castrol Classic?

Based on our original formulas these are:
• Period-correct additive packages for flat‑tappet cams & early valvetrain designs
• Correct high-zinc formulations for the protection needed - yet wont turn corrosive
• Authentic viscosity grades your engine was designed for
• Classic gear oils that protect early hypoid and non‑hypoid differentials and transmissions
• Won’t damage original gasket materials and Brass & Bronze compatible
• Trusted worldwide by restorers, collectors, museums and vintage racers

FOR ENGINES WITH PERSONALITY, HISTORY, AND A LITTLE BIT OF ATTITUDE

If your engine has strong opinions, grudges, or a soul forged before the iPhone - Castrol Classic is the only oil that speaks its language.

ARE YOU USING AN OIL WITH TOO MUCH ZINC???
The Zinc Myth: Why More Isn’t Better—and Might Be Killing Your Classic Engine

Let’s talk about something that’s quietly wrecking vintage engines in garages and shops across the country: overdosing on ZDDP.
Yes, zinc (ZDDP) is essential for flat-tappet cam protection. That’s not up for debate. But somewhere along the way, the conversation got hijacked by a kind of “more is better” folklore—spread by well-meaning forum posts, backyard chemists, and even a few boutique oil blenders who crank up zinc levels to look “hardcore” on a spec sheet.
Here’s the truth: excessive ZDDP doesn’t just plateau in effectiveness - it turns corrosive.
• High zinc levels accelerate acidic byproducts, especially in engines that sit for weeks or months between runs (sound familiar?)
• They interfere with detergent and dispersant systems, leading to sludge and varnish in engines that were clean for decades
• They require shorter oil change intervals, (could be 2 months!) or you risk pitting, staining, and premature wear—ironically, the very things ZDDP is supposed to prevent
• And if your classic has a catalytic converter (late ‘70s onward), high phosphorus will kill it fast
So why do some oils still push 1,350+ ppm zinc like it’s a badge of honor? Because it sells. Because it sounds “vintage.” Because nuance doesn’t fit on a label.
But real engine builders, restorers, and mechanics know better. They know metallurgy evolved. They know oil chemistry is a balancing act. And they know that blindly chasing zinc numbers is a shortcut to long-term damage.
That’s why the new Castrol Classic line exists. It’s not chasing trends - it’s going back to the source. These oils are formulated to match the original additive profiles used when your engine was built. Not too little. Not too much. Just right.
• Flat-tappet safe, with ZDDP levels tailored to the metallurgy of the time
• Non-corrosive, even in long-storage conditions
• Compatible with period seals, gaskets, and tolerances
• And backed by Castrol’s original formulations, not some modern guesswork
If you’re running a '55 Chevy, a '60s Austin Healey, a '70s 'Cuda, or a Series 1 Miata, this is the oil your engine was born to have flowing in it's viens.
💥 Stop chasing zinc. Start protecting your legacy.

Engineered to Last. Lubricated to Stay That Way

From the air-cooled genius of a Porsche 356 to the bulletproof engineering of a Mercedes W123, German cars built between the 1920s and 1980s were more than just vehicles—they were mechanical philosophies on wheels.

Porsche and VW led the charge with magnesium crankcases, dry-sump oiling systems, torsion-bar suspensions, and swing axles that taught generations to respect precision. Whether you’re adjusting valve lash on a 911 SC or syncing dual Solex carbs on a Beetle, you know these cars reward mechanical sympathy and punish shortcuts.

Mercedes-Benz brought its own brand of brilliance: the M180, M110, and OM617 engines were paragons of durability, and their manual gearboxes—often filled with yellow metal synchros—were built to last decades with the right care.

And here’s the part many overlook: Castrol was the factory-fill oil for countless German vehicles across these decades. Stirling Moss set the all time Mille Miglia record in 1955 running this Castrol oil in his 300SLR. It’s printed in the owner’s manuals, stamped on service charts, and recommended by the engineers who built them—from Zuffenhausen to Wolfsburg to Sindelfingen. These oils, based on the original Castrol formulas are finally available again here in the US.

🔧 SAE 30, 40, and 50 straight-weight engine oils as well as Multi weights like our 20w/50 — all ideal for splash-fed bearings, flat tappet cams, and high-magnesium crankcases. With the correct amount of Zinc.
⚙️ GL3 & 4 gear oils safe for brass and bronze internals—perfect for Porsche 901/915 gearboxes, VW swing axles, and Mercedes manual boxes – right up to mid eighties 930 Turbos!
🧴 Packaged in vintage-style metal tins with Castrol’s heritage branding—evoking the era of Bosch CDI systems and VDO instrumentation
📖 Period-correct additive packages—no aggressive detergents or friction modifiers that can compromise older metallurgy or seal materials
EU Made in the Europe, trusted by restorers, racers, and concours judges worldwide
If you’re keeping your Porsche, VW, or Mercedes alive with the same precision they were built with, Castrol Classic isn’t just compatible—it’s correct. It’s the oil your car was engineered around.

British Icons Deserve the Oil They Were Born With

From the overhead-cam brilliance of a Jaguar XK engine to the raw charm of an A-series in a Mini Cooper S and all the MGs and TRs, British cars from the 1920s through the 1980s were marvels of mechanical character.

These cars taught generations how to heel-and-toe, how to adjust SU carbs by ear, and how to coax life from a Lucas ignition on a damp morning. Whether you’re rowing through a Moss gearbox in a TR3 or listening to the whine of a Laycock de Normanville overdrive in a Mark 2 Saloon, you know these machines reward mechanical sympathy.

Then there was their lifeblood: Castrol was the factory-fill oil for virtually all of them. It’s printed right there in the original owner’s manuals, service charts, and dealer bulletins—from MG to Aston Martin.

And that’s why Castrol’s Classic line of engine and gear oils exist—not as a modern substitute, but as a continuation of that legacy based on the original formulas.

🔧 SAE 30, 40, and 50 straight-weight engine oils as well as the multi weights —ideal for splash-fed bearings, flat tappet cams, and rope rear main seals
⚙️ GL4 gear oils safe for yellow metals—perfect for synchromesh boxes with phosphor bronze baulk rings and worm-drive axles
🧴 Supplied in vintage-style metal tins with Castrol’s heritage branding—just like the ones that sat on the shelf at your local BMC dealer – back of the showroom past the new Minis, Morris Minors and that stunning Austin Healey
📖 Period-compatible additives—no modern detergents that can dislodge varnish and clog galleries
🇬🇧 Made in the UK, now available in the U.S.—trusted by the top restorers, racers, and concours judges alike

If you’re rebuilding a twin-cam MGA, fettling a Dolomite Sprint, or just keeping your Series I Land Rover on the road, Castrol Classic isn’t just the right oil—it’s the one your car was engineered around.

DO YOU DRIVE AN AIR-COOLED CLASSIC?
VW Bugs & busses, Porsche 911’s, 356’s & 993’s are the most obvious Classic air-cooled icons. But lets not forget about the Chevy Corvair, Citroen 2CV, Fiat 500’s, BMW Isettas. Like air cooled motorcycles, the oil in an air-cooled car engine does double-duty; The oil of course lubricates but it also helps carry the heat away from the friction and combustion areas. It’s important to remember that air cooled engine oil temperatures often far exceed the temperatures of conventional liquid cooled engines, so it is even more important to have the right oil in these vehicles. Classic air-cooled vehicles also often have larger machine tolerances than today’s engines & use flat tappets and older cork gaskets & seals. That means that modern spec oils will not protect these older engines and can often leak. Also the gearboxes of these air-cooled classics often have “Yellow metal” components (bronze, brass, etc.) and need lubricants that won’t be corrosive to those metals. Castrol Classic has created a group of premium small batch oils, with very specific formulas, correct for the technology of the day. In addition to higher-zinc multi-grade oils like our Classic 20w/50, we also have straight-weight 30W, 40W & even 50W for pre-war models, vintage racing, and extreme higher temperature environments. For gearboxes and differentials ST90 oil is designed specifically to be compatible with yellow metals applications. Visit us at www.classicoilsUSA.com to learn more about the correct oils for your classic cars & bikes. Oh, and they come in vintage-style enamel metal tins (with a built-in spout!)
