In 1932, John Wirtz lost his job in the middle of the Great Depression in the United States. John was a machinist working in Detroit making molds, some of which were used in the growing automobile battery market. As the story goes, John Wirtz decided this was an opportunity for him to start his own business making molds, as his machinist skill-set allowed him to do a better job and compete with anyone. That was the start of Wirtz Manufacturing Company in Port Huron, Michigan, in the garage of John Wirtz. In the pictures below, you can see our plant in 1958 on 24th Street in Port Huron, Mi, the same location it is now. John lived in front of the plant. At this point the plant had grown to a dedicated building not a garage. 87 years later, the building has grown significantly, with over 100,000 square feet of manufacturing space at our headquarters, which is the same building location as 1958, and another 40,000+ square feet at Plant 2 in Port Huron.
