πŸ’§ ASK AN ENGINEER!

Ever wonder what happens to all that rainwater after it hits the ground? Drainage design is a lot more than simply sending water downhill, especially here in Southeast Texas, where β€œdownhill” can be a pretty generous description. 😊

Our engineers have to work with existing grades, available outfalls, storm sewer systems, pipes, swales, and a whole lot of other site-specific constraints to make sure water has somewhere safe to go.

We asked Derek to explain how it works on a larger scale. Check out his answer above! And if you've got an engineering question you've always wondered about, send it our way.

Our surveyors spend plenty of time locating property corners, establishing boundaries, collecting field data, mapping existing conditions, and helping our clients better understand their land. And every now and then, the fieldwork comes with a few unexpected visitors! πŸ„

Whether you need a boundary survey, ALTA/NSPS survey, topographic survey, construction surveying, or other professional surveying services, our team is ready to put our expertise to work for you.

We know surveying. We just never know who we’ll meet along the way!

Woodworth Boulevard is coming to life!

We’re so excited to see the progress on this project and even more excited for the finished space to become a place where Port Arthur residents can not only travel safely, but also take walks and enjoy their community under the gazebo.

Surveying isn't limited to dry land. 🌊🌊🌊

For this project, our crew used a remote-controlled survey boat to perform a hydrographic survey, measuring the depth and shape of the pond below the water's surface.

This information helps engineers better understand underwater conditions for projects involving drainage, detention ponds, lakes, and other bodies of water.

πŸ”¦ Employee Spotlight: Ross Holt!

Ross joined AWC in 2012 after earning his drafting degree from Lamar and has grown into our Lead Drafter, helping bring complex civil engineering projects to life.

One project Ross is especially proud of is the 24-inch waterline project in Galveston, where he learned so much more about Civil 3D while helping deliver miles of critical infrastructure. Today, Ross enjoys creating 3D construction models that contractors can use directly in the field, helping projects move from design to reality with greater accuracy and efficiency.

Ross says his favorite part of AWC is the people. He values the strong camaraderie, flexible work environment, and a team that understands the importance of supporting one another both professionally and personally.

"I love the camaraderie. I don't think there's a better place you can work."

Roadside ditches play an important role in moving stormwater away from neighborhoods. Over time, silt naturally builds up, which can slow drainage and cause standing water.

Remember: A roadside ditch is part of a larger drainage system. Even if your section is clear, water can still back up if there's a blockage farther downstream. In those cases, a larger section of the ditch network may need maintenance.
