Big improvements are underway in wastewater treatment! 💧

One of the most significant upgrades to this wastewater treatment plant is now in service: a new Sequencing Batch Reactor (SBR) system designed to make treatment more efficient, automated, and easier to maintain.

Traditionally, wastewater treatment relies on multiple separate units to mix, aerate, and separate solids from water. The new SBR combines these processes into one system, using two alternating treatment basins to keep operations running efficiently while adapting to changing wastewater flows.

In addition to the SBR, the project includes advanced filtration and disinfection improvements designed to accommodate increased treatment demands while maintaining water quality standards for discharge into the receiving bayou.

For plant operators, that means simpler maintenance and greater operational flexibility. For the City of West Orange, Texas, it means more reliable infrastructure and responsible wastewater management.

What a fun night in Bridge City!

We were happy to join other local businesses at National Night Out: an evening celebrating and showing appreciation for the first responders who serve our community. Our booth had two very important engineering challenges: guessing how many mini construction cones were packed into a jar, and stopping a stopwatch at exactly 00:03:14. (We're engineers, the pi joke had to be done.)

A big thank-you to the Bridge City Chamber for putting together such a fun community event and to everyone who stopped by to play, guess, and hang out with us. We had a blast and we can't wait for next year.

🔦 Happy Friday! It's time to meet another one of our drafters, Ashley Concienne.

Ashley has been part of the AWC team since 2006, bringing nearly two decades of experience to her work as an Engineering Technician.

One project she’s especially enjoyed was the access road at Jack Brooks Regional Airport, where she helped design the roadway, including its pavers and corridor design. She also enjoyed working on Woodworth Boulevard, a project that brought roadway, drainage, and streetscape improvements together to create a more functional and welcoming space for the Port Arthur community.

For Ashley, one of the best parts of AWC is the family-oriented culture. She appreciates having a team that understands the importance of being there for both work and family. We're proud to have Ashley's experience, dedication, and creativity as part of our team.

If you saw a sea of red shirts throughout Orange County today, there’s a good reason for it. ❤️
Today was United Way of Orange County’s , bringing businesses and volunteers from across our community together to lend a hand on service projects throughout the area. The AWC team spent the day at Seek & Find Resale Shop in Bridge City, helping organize clothing donations and supporting the work they do for our community.
We’re proud to be part of this community that shows up to support one another!

💧 ASK AN ENGINEER!

Ever wonder what happens to all that rainwater after it hits the ground? Drainage design is a lot more than simply sending water downhill, especially here in Southeast Texas, where “downhill” can be a pretty generous description. 😊

Our engineers have to work with existing grades, available outfalls, storm sewer systems, pipes, swales, and a whole lot of other site-specific constraints to make sure water has somewhere safe to go.

Surveying isn't limited to dry land. 🌊🌊🌊

For this project, our crew used a remote-controlled survey boat to perform a hydrographic survey, measuring the depth and shape of the pond below the water's surface.

This information helps engineers better understand underwater conditions for projects involving drainage, detention ponds, lakes, and other bodies of water.

🔦 Employee Spotlight: Ross Holt!

Ross joined AWC in 2012 after earning his drafting degree from Lamar and has grown into our Lead Drafter, helping bring complex civil engineering projects to life.

One project Ross is especially proud of is the 24-inch waterline project in Galveston, where he learned so much more about Civil 3D while helping deliver miles of critical infrastructure. Today, Ross enjoys creating 3D construction models that contractors can use directly in the field, helping projects move from design to reality with greater accuracy and efficiency.

Ross says his favorite part of AWC is the people. He values the strong camaraderie, flexible work environment, and a team that understands the importance of supporting one another both professionally and personally.
