With hurricane season coming up, Civil Design and Construction Inc. is looking back on some of our past projects in the Greater New Orleans area. One of these projects is the Gulf Intercoastal Waterway West Closure Complex in New Orleans, LA. CD&C provided Cost Engineering Services to the design team including cost estimates using MCASES version Mii and construction schedule in Primavera P6 on this massive Civil Works project for USACE. This project was just one of many infrastructure improvement projects designed to help improve storm surge protection after Hurricane Katrina.

The West Closure Complex opened operationally in June 2011 and was finally completed in June 2012. It is the largest pump station in the world containing 11 pumps that have a capacity of moving over 19,000 cubic feet of water per second (cfs). This complex also contains one of the largest navigable sector gates in the country, with a 225 feet wide gate that allows for commercial traffic. Together along with miles of levee and T-Wall improvements, the West Closure Complex provides the 100 yr flood storm surge protection to three parishes (Orleans, Jefferson, and Plaquemines) during hurricane season.

Last week our President, Karla Weston, and SUE Department Manager, CJ Goodspeed, attended the 28th BAMI-I & UESI Utility Investigation School in Indianapolis, IN. They experienced a very informative and productive week of professional development training, education, and networking with other subsurface utility professionals and providers from around the country. Special thanks to GroundBreakers (a fellow Woman-Owned Business) for hosting this class at their impressive new facility in Indianapolis!
