There are some free goodies at the fire hall if anyone is interested. What doesn’t get taken is getting tossed.

Ice Storm 2025 left tons of brush and debris in its wake. Can you just pile it all up and burn it?

The short answer is, no. The BBIFD cannot “authorize” or give verbal permits for burning large brush piles. Based on DNR description of a permitted campfire, a large brush fire would be defined as any fire larger than 3 ft x 3 ft x 3 ft in size. The only time large brush piles can be burned on BBI is when there is continuous snow cover on the ground, AND when the pile is at least 50-75 ft from trees and structures, AND when the burn Is monitored carefully by the Individual responsible, AND when winds are calm.

Any brush burning observed outside of these conditions will be turned over to law enforcement.

BBIFD guidance goes beyond DNR fire rules because we can’t easily call for backup If a fire goes out of control.

So, what are you supposed to do with all this brush from the storm?
(1) Cut it up Into small pieces and enjoy lots of small campfires throughout the season.
(2) Call any one of the individuals or companies on BBI offering yard cleanup services.

Remember to call our non-emergency line, (231) 634-7085, on any day you wish to have a campfire. We will advise If conditions on BBI are not suitable that day.

And, even If you call, you are still 100% responsible for keeping your campfire under control, fully attended, and fully extinguished before you leave it.

Stay safe, and don’t start a fire you can’t finish! 🔥

Update 4/9/25: Limited power is back on the Island. Power at the Twp Hall, Fire Hall, and school has been restored as of this afternoon. This means we have a good chance at more Island power being turned on in the next day or days, but there’s a lot of work left to do. We do not have estimates of when more service may be reactivated. One step at a time. We will post more when we know more. Thanks to everyone for your patience and for helping each other.

4/7/25-no major updates yet today, so let’s take a moment to clear a few things up.

Eight years ago, the BBIFD made a choice to create this page. We weren’t required to do it. No volunteer FD is required to have anything online. A few people even criticized us for doing it. We just felt it was a way to help our small BBI community stay connected, both for routine notifications and potential Island emergencies.

The address of this public page is Facebook.com/BBIFD. It is easy to find. Literally anyone can share the updates we post here. You can share them to any person’s page or any group you wish, just by clicking the Share button as shown. We encourage you to share them if you want.

Most updates to this page have been handled by me, Dan Reynolds. I was trained as a public Information officer for Public Health/Emergency Preparedness, so it’s in my wheelhouse. If you have concerns with updates to this page, let’s speak directly. I’m at (231) 676-9336.

We are under no obligation to post updates or even to maintain this page. It Is here for the same reason each of us joined the Fire Department… because we want to help.

When the ice storm hit last week, we were Invited by Mackinac County 911/Emergency Management to participate remotely in the County Emergency Operations Center (EOC) set up for the storm event. Again, we weren’t required to, but we did, and I’m glad we did. At this point, county Emergency Management is in the lead, and we are just here on the Island trying to stay up to date. They are working with PIEG, Plaunt, and other entities to get our power back. When they need information or boots on the ground, then we are here to support that.

Lastly, we’ve confirmed that our BBIFD non-emergency phone number is working fine. That number is (231) 634-7085.

Stay safe, stay warm, stay strong!

Update 4/5 (Saturday): PIEG dispatched two crew members from Wolverine Power this morning to do a preliminary assessment of power line damage on BBI. They will only be here for a short time today. This is just the first step in a very lengthy process of restoring power. We will continue working with Mackinac County Emergency Management and will provide updates here as they occur.
