Why IPC Standards Matter in PCB Manufacturing
How do PCB designers, manufacturers, and assemblers across different regions establish consistent expectations for quality and performance?

IPC standards provide a common technical framework across the electronics manufacturing industry.
Several IPC standards are commonly referenced throughout PCB design and manufacturing:
📘 IPC-A-600 — Acceptability of Printed Boards
📘 IPC-6012 — Qualification and Performance Specification for Rigid Printed Boards
📘 IPC-4101 — Specification for Base Materials for Rigid and Multilayer Printed Boards
📘 IPC-2221 — Generic Standard on Printed Board Design
IPC also defines different performance classes based on application requirements:
Class 1 — General Electronics Products
Class 2 — Dedicated Service Electronics Products
Class 3 — High-Reliability Electronics Products

Understanding the applicable IPC requirements helps align design, manufacturing, inspection, and acceptance criteria throughout the PCB supply chain.

At SunshinePCB, quality and manufacturing requirements are aligned with the specifications defined for each application and project.

PCB Market Update: Price Increases Are Already Taking Effect

PCB material pricing is moving higher, and the impact is already being seen across the supply chain.

Recent price adjustments from major material suppliers reflect continued cost pressure on key PCB inputs, including copper, copper-clad laminate (CCL), and prepreg.

What is driving the increase?
• Copper: Higher copper costs are pushing up the cost of copper foil and other copper-based materials.
• CCL & Prepreg: Suppliers have announced additional price increases for selected products. Kingboard, for example, recently raised prices for certain FR-4 and prepreg products by 15%.
• Glass Fabric & Resin: Higher costs and tighter availability of key raw materials are adding further pressure to laminate pricing.
• High-Performance Materials: Demand for high-Tg, low-loss, and high-frequency materials remains strong, putting additional pressure on supply and capacity.

For PCB manufacturers and buyers, the effects go beyond material costs. Quotations, lead times, inventory planning, and sourcing decisions are all being affected.

This is an ongoing market development worth watching as suppliers adjust pricing and manage available capacity.

PCB pricing is no longer just a procurement issue — it is becoming an important factor in production and supply chain planning.

HDI: Enabling Higher Density and Miniaturization in PCB Design

As electronic devices continue to get smaller and more powerful, PCB designers face increasing challenges in fitting more connections into limited board space.

High-Density Interconnect (HDI) technology helps address these challenges by using smaller vias and advanced multilayer structures to increase routing density.

🔹 Laser-drilled microvias
Smaller via structures allow more routing space and greater interconnection density.

🔹 Via-in-pad structures
Integrating microvias directly into component pads helps improve fanout and make better use of available board space.

🔹 Sequential lamination
Supports stacked and staggered microvias across multiple layers, enabling more complex and compact PCB designs.

HDI is commonly used in applications where board size, routing density, and electrical performance are critical, including smartphones, servers, networking equipment, and other advanced electronics.

At SunshinePCB, HDI and microvia technology are part of our advanced PCB manufacturing capabilities, supporting high-density designs and demanding applications.

PCB 101 | PCB Structure Explained: More Than Just Layers

A PCB is more than a stack of copper layers. Every material and layer is carefully engineered to support electrical performance, reliability, and manufacturability.

A typical PCB combines several key elements:

🔹 Copper Layers — provide electrical connections and signal routing
🔹 Core & Prepreg — separate and support the conductive layers
🔹 Solder Mask — protects exposed copper and helps prevent damage
🔹 Silkscreen — supports identification, inspection, and assembly
🔹 Surface Finish — improves solderability and long-term reliability

Together, these elements influence signal integrity, thermal performance, mechanical stability, and manufacturing yield.

That’s why PCB structure and material selection are important from the very beginning of the design process.

In the next PCB 101 posts, we’ll take a closer look at each element and how it contributes to overall PCB performance.

Not every PCB is designed for the same application.

The number of copper layers is one of the key factors that determines a PCB’s routing capability, design flexibility, and manufacturing requirements.

• Single-sided PCBs— A simple and cost-effective structure commonly used in basic electronic products.

• Double-sided PCBs— With copper and components on both sides, double-sided boards provide more routing flexibility and allow for more complex designs.

• Multilayer PCBs— Multiple conductive layers are stacked into a compact structure, making them well suited for high-density and high-speed applications such as servers, networking equipment, automotive electronics, and medical devices.

The right layer structure depends on the application. Electrical performance, available space, reliability, and cost all play a role in determining the appropriate PCB design.

Choosing the right structure early in the design process can help balance performance, manufacturability, and overall product requirements.

PCB vs. PCBA: What’s the Difference?

PCB and PCBA are often used interchangeably—but they refer to two different stages of electronics manufacturing.

A PCB (Printed Circuit Board) is the bare board that provides the conductive pathways and mechanical structure needed to connect electronic components.

A PCBA (Printed Circuit Board Assembly) is the completed assembly after electronic components have been mounted and soldered onto the PCB.

Understanding this distinction is important when:

* Defining manufacturing requirements
* Requesting quotations
* Evaluating supplier capabilities
* Planning production timelines

Knowing whether you need a bare PCB or a fully assembled PCBA helps ensure clear communication and the right manufacturing expectations from the start.

At Sunshine, we specialize in PCB manufacturing, providing high-quality bare boards for a wide range of applications and industries.
