Unicorn has been the world leader in pre-filtered mushroom grow bags since 1990. We extrude our own bags and make our own filter, then combine the two to give you the easiest, most cost-effective way to produce mushrooms. From our 0.2 micron spawn bags to 5.0 micron fruiting bags and everything in between, our complete in-house production means we can fully customize to fit the needs of any project.

Concerned about plastic’s impact on the environment? We also provide oxi-biodegradable bags that can break down beyond a reasonably detectable level in 3-4yrs. We use a patented additive in the extruding process that makes polypropylene digestible to the vast majority of soil bacteria, in addition to having greatly accelerated UV and oxygen degradation. The additive inserts oxygen and other molecules within the polymer chains, allowing bacterial colonization of the surface and enabling petroleum based carbon as a food source. The oxidation process breaks up the plastic at the molecular level and results in atomic bits small enough to pass through a cell membrane and be digested via osmosis as if it were any other form of carbon. Meaning even if some of them end up as litter they'll still be quickly broken down by the elements and gobbled up by the soil biome.

Prefer the longer shelf life of conventional plastic? Oysters are among hundreds of fungi that can digest petroleum products. Over 50 plastic-eating fungi were discovered in just the past few years! Bioaccumulation does occur with certain plastic types, but our plastics contain no toxins upon mineralization; all it turns into besides water, co2, and humus are barely detectable copper and zinc ions. While fungi can also be used to mycoremediate other petrochemicals like oil, caution should be used in any plastic without an observed mineralization profile.

Update on the plastic-eating Pestalotiopsis Microspora: it's growing slowly and steadily on a substrate of plastic and hardwood fuel pellets, no grains or other nutrients were selected so this cultivar will be getting all its nutrition from plastic waste and fiber/water from hydrated fuel pellets. Should be ready to fruit in another week, maybe two. The lack of grains has slowed growth considerably, but that's to be expected. The real headline here is that it's getting nutrients from only plastic and non-nutritive fuel pellets.
