Surf’s up, and so is this substation. With hurricane season on the horizon, resilient systems like this one are top of mind for our utility partners.

Elevated 18 feet above grade to protect it from storm surge, this one-of-a-kind GIS substation will help the local utility deliver reliable power all year long on this exposed island location.

Here’s a snapshot from earlier this spring as we finished installing the precast building that will soon house this substation’s 138/12.47kV GIS equipment.

Safety starts from the ground up on substation sites. Miles of grounding cable buried below the surface protect utility teams once the station’s energized, like what we installed at this 230kV switchyard earlier this spring.

But it’s also the site team that builds a safety culture from day one that ensures everyone makes it home—overseeing the build and delivering quality work that will keep the station operating smoothly and safely for years to come.

LEGOs, lightsabers, and Darth Vader brought the fun to IEEE PES T&D 2026—but the real highlight was seeing the utility industry come together to talk about what’s next.

From conversations around data center growth and grid demand to networking, happy hour, and a little LEGO building along the way, it was a great week in Chicago. One of our favorite moments? Hearing from Brendan Foley, Lou Misenhamer, and George Brashear on the Data Center Stage talking about what successful grid collaboration can look like for utilities, data centers, and substation EPCs. Special thank you to our moderator Chris Wilson for leading the discussion.
