Hope's and doors add character to this traditional West Chester residence. This open and inviting living space connects to the natural landscape and blurs the line between outdoors and in.

FRIENDS SELECT SCHOOL FRIENDS CENTER - We have begun work on the renovation and restoration of three 19th century buildings on the site of Friends Center, the national and world hub for Quakerism. The buildings include 15,000 square feet on four floors, to be used for Upper School Humanities, Fine Arts, STEM, and Sciences. The exteriors will be designed to conform to historic guidelines, while interiors will provide state-of-the-art studios, labs, and classrooms – maximizing flexibility and learning zones, ventilation, and sustainable building practices. Occupancy is slated for the Fall 2022 academic session.

FRISCO, TX, PUBLIC LIBRARY - JBA continues to design interactive learning environments for children in libraries and museums, - in this case, the Frisco Train and Village in the new Frisco Public Library. Divided into activity zones for ages birth to five and six to twelve, the younger children setting allows for creative role play, locomotor development, and pre-reading skills. The older children area includes a STEM lab, robotics arena, race zone, and biology investigation. The venue is scheduled to open late Summer 2022.

THE PHILADELPHIA SCHOOL - JBA is currently working with this independent urban school on a Vision Plan to renovate 30,000 SF of the main school building, as well exterior play and gathering areas. The work envisions consolidation of academic groups, including primary classrooms, sciences, and the arts, as well as administration and the after-school program. A primary feature of the design is a new open lobby leading to dynamic commons/multipurpose space, which includes a teaching kitchen, collaborative space, lounges, etc. This area, in turn, connects to what will be renovated play and outdoor classroom space, with three 15’ openings to allow for connection of inside/outside in fair weather.

CLEAR SPRINGS COURT - JBA is currently working with Arcadia Land Company on design of a new residential development in the heart of the historic downtown of Doylestown, PA. The mixed-use project renovates a three-story 1980’s office building into residential lofts, fronting a courtyard shared with new townhouses. The site is conceived as a mews, a tight urban development with a lively streetscape, unfolding vistas, and a modern aesthetic. Units feature pedestrian-friendly garages, dynamic bays, stoops and balconies, and a vibrant palette of materials and colors. Occupancy is slated for Winter 2022.

PRINCETON FRIENDS MONTHLY MEETING - We recently completed schematic design for a new First Day School building for Princeton Monthly Meeting of the Society of Friends. The new building is conceived as two pavilions connected to the 1729 Meetinghouse, adjacent to the historic burial ground. The left-hand pavilion contains a Social Hall with appurtenant kitchen and storage, and it is meant to mirror the Meetinghouse (far right) in massing and geometry. The center pavilion contains First Day Classrooms, the Meeting Library, and other support spaces. It is conceived as a minimal structure, low, with a sweeping green roof, set behind a fieldstone wall that harkens to the burial ground wall.

We're always humbled by our amazing clients, by far the biggest sector of which is our work for non-profit institutions. Our renovations at Friends Select School's main campus opened this week, just as we embark on design of their newly acquired buildings at Friends Center two blocks away, to be occupied September 2022.

Renovations to a college-preparatory, Quaker school for Pre-K through 12th grade students.  Located on Philadelphia’s Benjamin Franklin Parkway, the school’s 1968 building was outmoded, both functionally and aesthetically.  The work included opening up ground floor lobby spaces to create co...
