The Mini started as a rough idea from Alec Issigonis, sketched quickly and built with urgency.

Fuel was expensive. Space was limited. The answer was a car that used almost every inch of its footprint. Engine turned sideways. Gearbox underneath. Wheels pushed right out to the corners.
That layout dictated everything that followed. Inside, comfort was not the priority. The seats were upright and firm. The doors were thin. Sliding windows replaced heavier mechanisms. It kept the car light, simple, and focused on driving rather than refinement.

On the road, it felt exactly as it was built. Immediate steering, very little weight, and a sense that the car changed direction the moment you asked it to. Those same traits carried into competition. The Mini’s success at the Monte Carlo Rally came from control and precision, not power. The design has endured because the fundamentals were right. The layout, the weight, the simplicity. What remains is the experience. Direct, mechanical, and unchanged in all the ways that matter.

Some ads don’t introduce a car. They make a case for its survival.

“SAVE AN ENDANGERED SPECIES.”

This vintage campaign for the Triumph TR6 and Triumph Spitfire leans into a moment in time when the open-top sports car was starting to disappear.

The message is clear. While others fade away, these remain.

True roadsters, built around simplicity and connection. Wind in your hair, direct steering, high-revving engines, and just enough between you and the road to make it all work. Not luxury. Not excess. Just driving. Even the language reflects the era. Survival. Economy. Reality. A reminder that cars like these were no longer guaranteed.

It is less about selling features and more about defending a way of driving that was already under threat. Not something every manufacturer was willing to say.

The Triumph TR3A stands as one of the most recognisable cars of the TR lineage.

Introduced in 1957 as an evolution of the TR3, it refined an already proven formula with subtle but important updates. A wider front grille, improved exterior details, and incremental engineering changes gave the car a more resolved and confident presence on the road.

At its core was a 2.0 litre four-cylinder engine, delivering strong, usable torque and a direct, mechanical driving experience. Built for responsiveness rather than outright speed, the TR3A offered a level of engagement that defined the era.

It also brought meaningful advancements. Front disc brakes became a defining feature, offering improved stopping power at a time when many rivals still relied on drums. Combined with rack-and-pinion steering, it delivered a driving feel that was immediate and precise.

While simple in construction, that simplicity is exactly what shaped its character. Minimal weight, direct inputs, and little separation between driver and machine.

Today, the TR3A holds a clear place in Triumph’s story. A car that balanced usability with raw driving appeal, and one that continues to be appreciated for its honesty and capability.

Moss continues to support these cars with a wide range of parts to help keep them on the road for years to come. Explore our range of parts: https://mossmotors.com/triumph-tr2-3-4

Some adverts sell the car. Others sell the attitude.

“Your Mother Wouldn’t Like It.”

This series from MG in the 1970s leaned fully into the tone of the time. Playful, slightly rebellious, and unmistakably tongue-in-cheek. Less about specifications, more about the kind of person who would choose to drive one.

Long before online configurators or instant reviews, this is how people discovered cars. Motor shows, showroom visits, and pages of magazines like Autocar or Motor Sport, filled with bold, character-driven advertising.

MG understood the brief. These ads did not just present a car. They gave it personality, wrapped in humour that captured the spirit of the 1970s perfectly.

Not something every marque got right.

I grew up with my Papa’s Signal Red 1963 TR4 summer mornings in his Toledo warehouse, tinkering on half-finished British cars, learning how to make things run just well enough to enjoy them.

Years later, that TR4 came to California. Life got busy. The project stalled. After Papa passed, the car sat until my dad retired and we finally picked it back up together. With advice from fellow Triumph owners, Moss Motors, and a lot of learning as we went, we brought Papa’s car back to life. My kids sat in the front seat pretending to steer while we worked, just like I once did.

Then, in January 2025, a wildfire took the house, the garage, and the TR4.

It feels strange to mourn a car but that red Triumph was never just a car. It was how three generations learned, fixed, laughed, and spent time together. The car is gone. The story isn’t.

Is a Miata-powered MGB GT still an MGB?

This 1967 MGB GT, recently sold on Bring a Trailer for $29.5k, has sparked exactly the kind of debate enthusiasts love. Underneath the classic British styling sits a heavily reworked Mazda Miata NB drivetrain, including a rebuilt BP4W 1.8 engine, five-speed gearbox, individual throttle bodies, MegaSquirt management, upgraded suspension, and a long list of modern reliability upgrades.

The argument for it is obvious. You get timeless MGB GT styling paired with one of the most proven and enjoyable modern four-cylinder drivetrains ever built. More power, better reliability, sharper response, easier parts support, and a car you can realistically drive every day without the quirks that often come with classic British electrics and aging drivetrains. For some, this is exactly what a restomod should be. Respect the original shape while improving the ownership experience.
But the argument against it is just as strong.

For purists, the soul of an MGB GT comes from its original character. The sound, the imperfections, the mechanical feel of the B-Series engine, even the quirks. Swap in a Miata drivetrain and, to some, it stops being an MG with modern upgrades and becomes something closer to a custom-bodied Mazda. There is also the question of value. At nearly $30k, does a modified car like this deserve the same money as a well-preserved original?

Either way, builds like this sit right at the centre of where classic car culture is heading. Driveability versus originality. Preservation versus evolution.

Question Is: Would you pay $29.5K for it? Let us know in the comments below.
