We asked our Civil Engineer, Mark McKlin, what goes into making a site accessible for all users. Here’s what he shared:

“Making a site ADA compliant requires the Engineer to evaluate the slopes and finish grades with greater attention to detail. ADA access to a place of business requires that certain parking stalls and pedestrian pathways be relatively flat. When stairs, ramps, or sidewalk switchbacks are required on a site, ADA guidelines assist with placement of railings, pavement markings, signage, and the dimensions of stairs.”

How do you balance design with budget or client expectations?
It’s one of the trickiest parts of engineering—and one we deal with every day.

“In many projects, the balance between budget and client expectations can be the most difficult hurdle to clear,” says Zahner engineering technician Mark McKlin. “One method we use is providing construction material quantities with the preliminary design. That way, owners get a real financial picture before final plans are made.”
By showing clients what’s feasible from the start, they can make informed decisions about what stays, what changes, and what fits. It’s not just smart engineering—it’s smart planning.
