In this video, we explain the 3 critical things you must verify — including Florida licensed structural engineering, Risk Category 2 requirements, wind loads, and foundation design under the Florida Residential Building Code (FBC-R).

Many pole barn packages are not engineered to meet Florida’s residential standards. Make sure your structure is designed properly before you buy.

Thinking about pier and beam foundations?

Pier and beam systems elevate your home off the ground using concrete piers and beams. This design helps with drainage, keeps the structure above minor flooding, and makes it easier to access plumbing and utilities. But they do require moisture management—crawl spaces can attract humidity and pests if not ventilated properly.

➡️ A great choice where soil shifts or water tables are a concern, but they need careful design and maintenance.

Not every building product makes the cut in Florida.

Before a product gets a Florida Product Approval number, it has to pass strict lab testing. Components are exposed to simulated hurricane winds, wind-borne debris impact, water intrusion, and structural stress. Only products that meet or exceed state building code requirements are approved for use.

Takeaway:
➡️ When you see an FPA number, it means that product has survived real hurricane-level testing

Here’s how to make sure your home’s components are Florida-approved.

Every approved component—windows, doors, roofing materials—will have a Florida Product Approval (FPA) number. You can usually find it on the product documentation, labels, or engineering packet. To double-check, visit floridabuilding.org, enter the manufacturer or product type, and see if it’s listed in the official state database.
Takeaway:
➡️ Always confirm the FPA number before you buy or install—it’s your proof the product is legal and safe in Florida.

Ever wonder why every window, door, and roof in Florida needs a Product Approval Number?

Florida is one of the harshest building environments in the country—high winds, hurricanes, and heavy rain. The Florida Product Approval (FPA) system exists to ensure building components are tested and proven to handle those conditions. Without it, homes would be more vulnerable to damage and failures during storms.
Takeaway:
➡️ FPA numbers exist to protect you, your family, and your home from Florida’s extreme weather.
