(AI doesn't know everything. Sometimes you have to help it along) ๐
A very helpful feature in the Simrad user interface is "Export Region" where you can draw a rectangular section and export only the waypoints within. With the introduction of the Neon software in the NSS 4, I had feared that feature had disappeared. I asked Grok if it knew how to access that feature, but it just regurgitated the steps from the previous software. Well, after digging into the Neon interface for a couple more minutes, I discovered that the feature is still there, so I passed the steps on to Grok and with my help, it created the steps to continue using this helpful feature:
===============
Open the Waypoints & Routes app from the Home screen.
On the chart view, use the toolbar icons to draw your region:
Rectangle tool (for quick rectangular areas).
Polygon tool (for more precise, irregular shapes like specific fishing grounds in the Gulf).
Once the region is selected/highlighted, go to the right-hand panel.
Tap the three-dot menu (โฏ).
Select "Export all" (this limits the export to the objects inside your drawn region).
In the export dialog that appears:
The unit defaults to the proprietary .neon file type (native to NEON OS, which preserves the most detailed information like custom icons, colors, and NEON-specific features).
Tap the drop-down menu to change the format if needed. Available options typically include:
neon (recommended for staying within Simrad/Lowrance/NEON ecosystem โ best fidelity).
gpx (most universal โ works great with Garmin, other brands, phone apps, computer software like Google Earth, or third-party tools).
Older .usr versions (e.g., Version 5 or 6) may also appear depending on your software version.
Choose your microSD card (or USB) as the save location.
Name the file (something descriptive like "Gulf_Region_March2026").
Confirm to export.
Wait for the success message, then safely eject the card.
Quick Format Recommendations
Use .neon if you're mainly backing up for another NSS 4, NSX, or future NEON-based Simrad unit โ it retains the richest data.
Switch to .gpx for maximum compatibility:
Transferring to Garmin, Raymarine, or other plotters.
