Coastal Plains Engineering, P.A. has had an opportunity to help a couple of local firms recover from the effects of Hurricane Matthew. While wandering around jobsites on Saturday morning is not usually on my schedule, I am grateful for work and the opportunity to be of service to my community.

Nail salon ventilation...A topic near and dear to my heart as I probably design 10 of these a year. There are some pretty noxious chemicals involved and eliminating those odors are pretty important for health and the comfort of the client/customers.

Now even more water efficient fixtures are routinely available. Thanks to the EPA Watersense Program. This program has encouraged the development of fixtures 20% below the previous standard. (1.6 Gal per flush before...now 1.28 GPF). Many people dislike the 1.6 models..but I personally have never had an issue with them. By and large the fixtures (toilets and urinals) work pretty well. 20 years ago I heard lots of complaints from my clients about how they worked (or did not) but like most things, a combination of the lowering of expectations and manufacturing improvements brought people around.

Interesting article about LED lighting. I had a conversation with a client and he was genuinely surprised that LED's did not provide significantly more light than flourescents (for a given wattage) They have many more characteristics which make them desirable (long life, color rendering index, dimmability). But the first cost can be prohibitive to some private sector clients. There are govt and utility subsidies that can help offset this though.

14 SEER equipment is now (and has been for quite awhile) the de facto minimum SEER rating for heat pumps and AC units in our region of the country. I remember in 97' I paid a big premium to get 14 SEER units. The times they are a changin'..
